Q. about shoe size - half sizes

So I went to a local shoe shop today to get a new pair of slippers for Paige, as she has no room left in her old ones (3.5f)... She wears them barefoot. It is a startrite stockist, so not a cheapo make.

Anyway, I was surprised to find that she's only went up 1/2 a size and is now a 4f. I bought the new slippers, but is there really much difference in half sizes? She was asleep when measured so it is definitely accurate, and I haven't tried them on her yet as she's still sleeping.

I just hope she fits these ones for longer this time! And if she does grow, I hope its a big difference so I can justify buying a new pair!

That's quite strange. I know Clarks allow growth room in theres, little dude has only gone up half a size but his 3.5's are still fine for a few weeks because of the growth room.

Might be worth going back in with her when she's awake and getting them to check to see how much room she has got in the 4's. You don't want to be buying new shoes every month or two because she's gone up half a size

It's not a huge difference in sizes. I often get half sizes because Avery's left foot is 1/2 size bigger than her right. So the shoe isn't enormous on her right root, I get one in a half size to fit both feet reasonably. But I've never noticed a large difference between a 6.5 and a 7.

got my wee girls feet measured at easter. she is a size 4, retailer gave her a 4 and a half as she fitted the 4 perfect and would of had no room for growth so for me the half size made more sense and she walks well in them. x

First off, Clarkes have always said to me that the size has to be measured when the child is standing, as the foot widens when their weight is on it and the length will measure differently too as the shoe will sit differently on the foot.

Secondly, as others have said there's not much difference in half sizes and it is for that reason that usually they size you up at least a size. Infact, Clarkes usually size you up with half a size growing in them also, so if they are fitting a size 4 okay still they'll prob. give you a 4.5.

I understand what you're saying about the shop being a Startrite stockist, but to my knowledge only Clarkes staff get trained in specifically measuring and fitting children's shoes. The lady I co-teach with used to be a Clarkes children's shoe fitter and she has said that to me in the past.

If I were you I'd pop into a Clarkes and get LOs foot measured, even if you then don't buy any shoes. xxx

I agree with the others i think you might have been advised on the wrong size

my LOs first shoes were a 4F and i got him measured after 8 weeks then 12 weeks etc... they lastest 6 months but after 4 months he was measuring a 4.5G but his first shoes (which were a boot stlye hence why the f fitting fitted) still fitted perfectly. I still brought him a pair of clarks trainers that were in their sale and a pair of clarks canvas shoes in a 4.5G well they only lasted 2 months because he shot into a 5.

so i think if shes only changed by half a size now she could possibly shot in to the next size quite quickily

I got her measure in Clarks 2 weeks ago and bought her a pair of doodles, she measured a 4.5f in Clarks... But the doodles are huge! She has loads is space in them compared to any others. I think I will be buying her shoes in Clarks from now on anyway, I prefer them and the ladies there seemed much more friendly than the door-faced woman in my local shop.
tried her new slippers on, and there is a bit of room, but not as much as there could be in my opinion.

Forgot to add... When she got measured in Clarks, she wasn't standing either. But the lady did have a good look and feel at how she walked in them etc to make sure they fitted right.

We will measure them sat down but always say its not as accurate standing (might be different depending on branches)

I work at clarks and we get quite a few people come in complaining about padders, start rite and brantanos.

If you pop her into clarks with the start rite slippers they will generally give them a check for you

We'd planned to buy clarkes but couldn't find any that actually fitted her feet (small, wide and high!) regardless of the size, but all three stockists advised us that Startrite usually measure up half a size smaller than Clarkes (and I saw this to be true on my little girl, having her measured three times) - so the 4F in startrite may well pretty much the same size as the 4.5F in Clarkes.

I dont doubt that she was measured correctly, I just feel that it was pointless buying a half size bigger! Especially slippers lol. When I put the slippers together they are exactly the same... but there is more toe space in the 4s rather than the 3.5
Still nowhere near as much room as her clarks shoes though

Doodles always tend to come up a little bit longer (compared to normal Clarks shoes that size), so that may be a reason they seem so much bigger than the 4's. Especially as Start Rite do measure up smaller. Maybe take them back and pop to Clarks? We do Doodle slippers as well so they should come up as generous as her shoes
