I'm located in North carolina(united states)

I allowed my child's father to put his name on my child's birth certificate.

I failed at choosing to allow him to do that.

He is a addict and alcoholic,is better off not being in her life.

she was born a month ago

they had us sign a affadavit for not being married when she was born.

I have yet to pick up her birth certificate,I am gonna pick it up asap.

What are the steps in getting him off?
I understand some may say a father has rights, but a good father has more rights. He is better off out of her life,I am saving my child from heartbreak and abuse.

I even gave her his last name :(

I was in the daze and was talked into doing these things.I was in a bubbly mood not thinking about her future and how dangerous it is for him to be involved,I could cry,I hate I made those decisions.

How do I get her last name changed to my last name??? how much will these things cost??

I recieved her social security card a week after she was born and it of course states his last name on her card.

someone help me to handle these things.I googled and I am so confused.I will research some more. Please offer me some advice.Love this board and all of you ladies. Some of us made bad choices in mates. It's a learning lesson,we will make it and survive.Remember you are not the first or last to not have the happy family, white pickett fence and lab dog.We are going to make it.! Our babies were meant to be here by any means.Hugs to you all, please offer your best advice, thanks in advance:kiss:

Hi Hon :hugs::hugs:

I'm not sure if the rules are different in the US, or indeed in your own State, but here in the UK once someone's name is on the birth certificate then it is impossible to have them removed unless you have a DNA test result that shows they are indeed not the biological father :nope:

It's the same with last names ... they simply can't be changed unless it's via DNA proof or if there was no father originally on the certificate and one is being added.

Sorry to be the bearer of probable bad tidings :( :hugs::hugs:

i dont think you can tbh sorry, in UK can get a deed poll which legally allows the new name to be used on official documents but cant change the birth certificate as it is a historical record and the facts recorded were assumed to be true at the time, i wanted to do the same but here it just cant be done :hugs:

Here is the US it is possible to change her last name, but you have to apply and be granted legal custody of your child first. You need to talk with a lawyer, a lot of them do free consultations and will at least get you pointed in the right direction. I'm not sure, but I don't think you can have him removed from her birth certificate, but again you should really be asking a lawyer these questions.

where i am once its on the birth certificate unless dna proves other wise or the child is legal adopted by someone else then it stay on.

the name can only be changed with the fathers permission unless you havnt seen or heard from them in 2 years.

in uk unless you can proof the man isn't actually genetically the babies father you can't change the name and even then you can't change the surname until you re-register the child.

As above really, you won't be able to remove him unless a dna test confirms he's not the childs father. xx
