Question for those who have had emcs followed by elective.

Hi All,

Had an emcs with DD where not much went to plan, epidural didn't work so as soon as DD was out... They gave me a general and sent hubby out with baby. He did skin to skin and watched her while u was in recovery.

This time round (elective) I'm thinking of arranging for him to do skin to skin again...although it is something I would love I want him to have something nice to do.

For those of you in the UK did Dad get to cut the cord on an elective. Maybe if he could do that I could do S2S.

With my elective with ds2, dh wasn't allowed to cut the cord as he wasn't allowed near my incision, but he was allowed to cut it shorter though once baby had been moved away. He loved that as he'd really wanted to do it with both my boys (ds1 was an emcs and they whisked him away to do checks etc so didn't have the opportunity).

With skin to skin you should definitely be 'allowed'. I got that with ds2 although I struggled to hold him as he was nearly 10lbs and I'd developed a horrible shoulder cramp during the section You just have to ask/insist at your appointments. Good luck

I had an elective after an emcs and my oh wasn't allowed to cut the cord due to things needing to be sterile and him generally not bring allowed down that end of things.

But he was able to take a camera in and take photos of our daughter being taken out of me. We then had photos together in theatre and I was handed her as soon as she was out. Once they moved me from the operating table to the hospital bed I started breastfeeding right away while still in theatre!

Because I wanted to do breastfeeding immediately oh didn't get immediate skin to skin but had I not wanted to there would have been no issues at all with him getting that time with her.

Instead we were taken to recovery and as soon as she'd finished her first feed from me oh changed her first nappy and put her first little vest on.

I LOVED my elective experience SO much and cannot wait to do it again this time.

My first was meant to be an elective ceasarean, bur she came early and turned into an EMCS, and my second was elective and went to plan. Both times I got to do skin to skin and hubs got the cut the cord. Hope that helps x

We had it offered on the elective C-section, and an invitation to see DS born / lifted out although OH didnt want to go that close lol.
