I ADORE this machine btw, one of my best purchases. But my question to those with one. Why do the instructions ask you to do the hot shot of water before adding the formula? You are meant to do the hot shot, add formula and shake, and return for the top up of cool water. Why cant you start with the formula already in the bottle? I only ask as adding formula to steaming water sticks it to the spoon/bottle neck where as pouring into a dry bottle means no sticking. Thanks

My take on it is because the initial hot shot also sterilises the bottle as an extra pre caution? But yes you are right the formula just sticks to the top.

By far our best purchase too :)

Hm wondered that, or whether it was to ensure the formula mixed properly.. but it mixes well either way you do it. As I sterilise the bottles religiously I think I'm going to stick to putting it in dry..I feel like I have more chance of creating bacteria etc doing in their way, because of what gets stuck on the spoon etc..I seem to be constantly washing the scoop!

I bought some formula pots so I just pour it straight in after the hot shot, which is quicker and stops the scoop getting messy. And does away with me losing count of the scoops haha. Can't see why you couldn't premeasure the formula into the sterilised bottles first though and seal them up until you need them.

Hi,

I was told by midwife that you always add formula to water no matter what and took great pains to emphasise it several times as if having a baby has shut my brain down! Although I am not sure why it needs to be done this way I will continue to do it this way.

BTW, this machine is the best £55 I spent. It has revolutionised feeding times, particularly at night :)

Thanks I do have dispenser pots by bibi which help but still forms a bit of a crust on the spout, no biggie just would have none of this if you added it to the bottle first. I wonder why the mw was so hellbent on it. Although I can see how when making a bottle yourself, a heaped pile of formula in the bottom might alter your measuring when you add water and follow the scale on the bottle. But as the machine is set to pour a set, accurate amount, I don't understand the need to add formula after water

I'm sure the powder to water thing is about measuring accurately.

Yes I'd imagine that it's so you measure the water accurately, if using powder first you would add less water to the Oz mark line? As for the perfect prep I can't think why. Maybe the powder mixes better if put in after the water? I would try it and see if it makes any difference. You are still putting hot hot water in there anyway so that would sterilise the bottle and the formula together.
I wondered this as it would be easy to put the formula in the sterilised bottles and leave them ready to make up. Could you even put the powder in, then hot shot then cooled water tip up and then shake?? Suppose just trial and error, as long as the powder dissolves I can't see a problem as the machine will measure out the exact amount of water anyway so no need to worry about getting that bit right

Sorry to interrupt this post :) .. Where did you get the perfect prep for £55 .. I wud love one but it's hard to justify £100 at the mo x

It was on offer at toys r is for £65 the other day

Sadly it does looks like most places are back up to £99.99. I got it with Babies R us (around £65 I think) the first was faulty, never used it for a bottle. But Tommee Tippee replaced it no questions asked. Second one perfectly fine.

Loving my perfect prep machine! Think if you put the formula in first, it is likely to clump together and not get dissolved properly, which doesn't happen the same if the water goes in first.
