Likely a silly question, but is there anything I should be considering when it comes to having a newborn during a rainy season? We've had a horrible drought here for a few years and my son is a July baby. He honestly didn't experience rain until he was quite old. We are due to receive loads of rain through May, and baby's due late March. It's rainy now, but we love walks in the rain and I've always spent time outside since son was very little. Is that just not going to happen with a baby this time? Do you just use a baby carrier and an umbrella? Stroller + car seat + rain cover? Walk me through toddler, baby, and rain!

What kind of rain carrier? I've seen them advertised for strollers but never actually seen anyone using one. We only have a BOB stroller that we'll use with the car seat for the early months. I know BOB makes a rain cover but I don't think it works with a car seat adapter... Do car seat rain covers exist?

Is it worth getting something for two months of rain?

I'm not trying to be dense. It's a whole part of life I've never dealt with at the baby stage.

Would baby be OK in a light rain with Ergo with a hat and the hood? Or do you risk baby getting too cold that way?

When we bought our pram (stroller) it came with a rain cover, could you see if you can order one online? Here in the UK we can buy rain covers for car seats, I'm not too sure where you are?

Personally, even if it's light rain I always use the rain cover, but I know plenty people who just use the hoods in light showers.

We lived in Vancouver until my LO was 3.5 and encountered more than our fair share of rain!

We did buy a rain cover for her stroller but honestly it was a real pain and I found that putting the umbrella on the stroller up and a thick blanket over her legs kept her perfectly dry. When she was a newborn I think the stroller umbrella covered her completely. I never would have made it outside if I avoided rain with a baby, just try out a short walk first and see if there are any issues. Bring a spare set of clothes if you're going for a longer walk just in case baby does get wet.

I never really ran into any problems or worried much about it. :)

I baby wear and I bought a raincoat for me that's big enough to fit round both of us and threaded the straps of my mei tai through one of DS's old jackets to make a carrier cover. Or I just use an umbrella if it's not windy.

Thanks ladies! I'm not one to usually fuss too much over these things, but for whatever reason news that the El Nino rain is going to continue into late May instead of finishing up in March sent me for a loop!

I've just spent some time Googling and Amazoning and looking at different options. I think I'll just start out with baby bundled in a carrier for short walks and see how it's going from there. Using a big rain coat to cover both of us is a great idea!

It rains a lot in NZ in winter too and we can't use an umbrella as it's much too windy where we live so we just use a rain cover on the buggy or I baby wear and tuck him inside my rain coat.

It's just water at the end of the day, as long as they're not also cold a few spots of rain never hurt anyone. :)

I would recommend a carrier plus a hat on the baby or an umbrella depending on how rainy it is. For example, a hat might be enough to protect against a light rain that isn't very cold. A heavier colder rain might require an umbrella, on the other hand. Or, when the baby is past the newborn stage, letting the baby feel the rain might be OK if it's a light rain and if it's not too cold.

We have a plastic see through rain cover for the pushchair. It rains a lot here so I make sure I've always got it with me!
