Random question about spermies *tmi warning*

Well, i'm not entirely sure how to ask this in a way that isn't gross. So i'm just gonna go ahead and ask...

I'm not currently ttc but will be in the future. As i'm on the pill me and my OH don't use condoms and i've noticed that after we've his semen seems to be really thin in consistency, like really runny liquid (sorry, that was the tmi bit!) Do you think this could mean there's a problem with his ??

Apologies for the randomness and gross nature of this question, i'm just a bit worried we might run into problems in the future, like he maybe has a low sperm count.

i don't think the thickness has something to do with it...but maybe someone here will have a better explanation for you .

Apparently it can vary in thickness. Sometimes it can be quite runny and other times quite lumpy. It doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem but if you're worried get a SA done before you start ttc.

I dont think you have any reason to worry about this... the runny stuff isnt actually sperm - it is just the seminal fluid which the sperm lives in.

Men's ejacualte varies quite a bit from watery to a more viscous white stuff.

I don't think there is any way to tell a man has a low sperm count just from looking with the naked eye.

More worrying would be issues in his medical history e.g. drinks heaily, past history of chemo, mumps affecting his testicles, operations down there etc

What is normal semen?

Semen is usually white or grey, but can occasionally appear yellowish. Pink or red semen suggests that blood is present. Although this is only rarely due to a serious health problem, men with semen that seems bloodstained should seek advice from their family doctor.

Semen clots almost immediately after ejaculation, forming a sticky, jelly-like liquid. It will liquefy again in 5 to 40 minutes. It is quite normal for semen to form jelly-like globules and this does not indicate any health or fertility problem. Failure of clotting and subsequent liquefaction can cause fertility problems.

The average volume of semen produced at ejaculation is 2 to 5ml. Volumes consistently less than 1.5ml (hypospermia) or more than 5.5ml (hyperspermia) are probably abnormal. Lower volumes may occur after very frequent ejaculation and higher volumes are seen after prolonged abstinence.

Absolutely fine - according to my book *puts spectacles on to look knowledgeable* - sperm is normally thin in consistency straight after ejaculation then thickens and goes clumpy before reverting back to being thin some time later!
