Hello!

I'm going to start taking these from 32 weeks and was planning on starting with 1 capsule a day and gradually building up to 4. However, the capsules I've bought each contain 400mg and I don't know whether this is the standard dosage for one capsule or whether it is particularly low or high.

Can any of you tell me what dosage your raspberry leaf capsules are and how many you've been taking?

Thank you!
Lx

Sorry hun cant tell you about the capsules but the only thing i can suggest is if you ask at a health shop when you go in.Im drinking the tea and started on 1 cup of tea a day at 36 weeks and now im on 2 cups a day im going to start drinking 3 cups a day as from tommorrow. So ive gradually built it up.

Hi there...I might give the the tea a try actually. The capsules I've bought can be broken and used as tea so will give that a go. I'm not usually a big herbal tea fan though so thought I'd buy the tablets incase I don't like it!

Did you feel that the raspberry leaf helped with your labour? I imagine it's fairly hard to conclude!

Right...I've done a bit of research on the internet and it seems that 400mg is a fairly low dose, so I think I'll take 1 a day from 32 weeks, 2 a day from 34 weeks, 3 a day from 36 weeks and 4 a day from 37 weeks. If anyone is thinking, "Oh my God! Don't do that!", please feel free to let me know!!

my mates on 4 cups a day atm!!!!! shes nearly 38 weeks tho..

I'm going to check with my midwife next week I think. Where did you get your capsules from? I've smelt that tea and don't really fancy it. Does one tablet = one cup of tea?

I got the capsules from Holland and Barrett (they have an online shop if there isn't one near you). It was £6.50 for 100 capsules. From what I can tell 1 cup of tea contains more raspberry leaf than 1 400mg capsule.

Well I've read an article on babycentre.co.uk and it said that it is ok to start with 1 a day at 32 weeks and gradually build up to a maximum of 4 a day. Seems it is fine to take it for the last 8 weeks so long as you don't have too much too soon. Here is the article for anyone who is interested...

Sounds like the latter stages of your labour were quite quick Serina, that's very reassuring!

Ooh, not heard of this before. Good article on babycentre, thanks :-)

I'm not a herbal tea fan so I think I'll give the capsules a go.

Hi, i'm having one cup per day at the mo and have been since 33 weeks. I plan to increase to two at 36 weeks. i quite like the tea and actually having a slight craving for it! hmmmm think i'll have my daily cuppa now!

I've read various articles that say its safe to take at 32 weeks onwards, starting gradually. i've never beeen in labour before so don't know how it will effect me but i'm getting a lot more light period type pains than before so i presume its having some effect on my uterus.

was probably after 36weeks, had couple of cups before that. I used to drink all through my false labours lol think might go buy some now haha

HI,

Just wanted to add, I thought 32 weeks was a bit early too. Also I used it and had a 26 hr labour ended up in having a drip to get contractions doing anything plus, I did have a slight heamorridge to whihc it is suppost to help avoid, so I wld say that it didn't work for me.

However I wld also like to add that I read recently it is linked to high bp and pre-clampsia in late pregnancy, and I had high bp in the end within a week of drinking abt 2-3 cups a day! Now it's not prooven and is prob hype on a tiny minority, but just wanted everyone to be aware. I will try and find a link!

Love & hugs xxx

Red Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus)
The raspberry vine is native to both America and Europe. The roots, leaves, and berries have long been appreciated for their nutritive value. Native Americans gave raspberry leaves to women and animals during birth to strengthen and speed delivery, and we learned this virtue from them. Today, pregnant women take red raspberry leaf to tone the uterus, and to prevent hemorrhaging during birth.

Red raspberry leaf tea provides an excellent source of minerals and vitamins during pregnancy. It is thought it may help build breast tissue during pregnancy as do all highly nutritious lactogenic teas. Humphrey records that it does not appear to contribute to over-supply after birth. Red raspberry leaf is said to bring on the milk and make it richer.

Caution - low milk supply: Raspberry leaf tea is astringent (tightens and constricts bodily tissues) and taken as a "single" can be anti-lactogenic for women who are sensitive to this effect. For these women, it is probably safe to use red raspberry leaf as one ingredient in a lactation tea mixture.

Pregnancy caution: Red raspberry tea may stimulate the uterus. To be on the safe side, build up dosage slowly, beginning with one cup per day for a week, two cups per day next week, and so on up to four cups per day. Consult your doctor before taking raspberry tea if you are at risk for miscarriage.

Sources: Health-food stores; herbal pharmacies; online stores.

Dosage and Preparation:

Mothers take up to a quart of red raspberry leaf tea per day during pregnancy. See above. Red-raspberry tea is said to promote milk production the first week postpartum, though stinging nettle or alfalfa may be the better herb if there is risk of low milk supply-see above .
Medicinal tea: Pour 1 cup of just-boiled water over 2 teaspoons of the dried leaf and steep for 5 minutes. Sweeten with a natural sweetener to taste. Build up slowly to 4 cups a day during pregnancy
Red raspberry leaf as a mild beverage: Steep 1/2 teaspoon of dried leaves in 1 cup of just-boiled water for 1 - 3 minutes. Sweeten with a natural sweetener to taste.

"But research shows that raspberry leaf may cause pre-eclampsia, a life-threatening condition for the mother in late pregnancy, and make the baby more likely to need special care after the birth."

https://www.expectancy.co.uk/docs/advicesheet04.pdf

Precautions - do remember that raspberry leaf contains powerful chemicals which act in the
same way as drugs – just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s safe for everyone. If you’ve had
a previous Caesarean, avoid raspberry leaf as it may put stress the uterine scar. Similarly if
you’ve had a premature labour or very rapid labour, or any vaginal bleeding, either in this
pregnancy or a previous one, avoid raspberry leaf as it may cause contractions. It should also be
avoided if you are expecting more than one baby, or have any serious pregnancy complications
eg severe high blood pressure, breech baby (bottom first) or you’re due to have a planned
Caesarean for specific medical reasons. If you are anaemic & have been prescribed iron tablets,
you should stop the raspberry leaf as it may reduce the amount of iron (& other minerals such as
calcium & magnesium) that your body absorbs. Also avoid raspberry leaf if you’re taking antidepressants.

Thank you for that information ShiningStar
