I didn't think there'd be a difference..

I've been giving my 7 week old ready made SMA for just over a week and she's been doing ok with it, in fact she guzzles it which is great because I thought i'd have issues switching her from breast milk. OH wanted to try powder because of the cost saving. She had two bottles today and has barely settled.

After the first bottle she was crying and straining for a good while, resulting in a massively dirty nappy, dark green and thick, really different to the dirty nappies on ready made, even though today's was the first in 24 hours or so. After the second bottle she cried for two hours straight, only settling now after a feed of ready made.

Has anybody experienced this before, such a difference between the two? It looks like powder formula is thicker than ready made, could this be the issue?

I used cartons for about 8 or 9 weeks and then switched to powder formula, I used Aptimal though, purely because the first infant milk is the closest thing you can get to breast milk as it contains all the friendly bacteria etc. LO didnt notice any difference between the carton and powders. As long as you follow the instructions to the T you shouldnt have any problems. They should be made with the exact amounts of powder and water. Try switching brands. If you still have a problem then speak to your HV :)

there is an ever so slight difference that some babies notice and some dont. My little one will drink either and not be fussed but others do notice!
Ready made milk is slighty thicker and creamier. Where as powder does tend to be more watery!
Maybe she just prefers it thicker! hehe.
Good luck hun xx

There can be a difference. Obviously the ready made stuff has different preservatives and so that it'll keep, and that can make a difference to some babies tummies!

Maybe try her on a different powder, like C&G? SMA seems to be one of those formulae which babies either get on with or not. We tried my LO with some ready made SMA, and it just made her vomit. But she was fine on Aptimil and Cow and Gate :)

We are going to use the ready made formula, and are going with SMA too as it comes in 1 litre cartons which works out the cheapest liquid one. xx

I noticed this with my LO too. We used the ready made cans for the first couple of days when we got home and then went to formula and not she is kind of unsettled. I was going to mention something to her doctor when I see them next week to see if I should switch formulas.

Yeah, think I'll do that too!!

Fran has been on SMA since birth and got quite bunged up at 2 days old. We gave her a bit of cooled boiled water to get things moving and she has been fine ever since. If she seems to be straining a bit then we just give her a couple of oz and she is fine, but we have only had to do this a couple of times.

It might just be that she needs to get used to the change from ready made to powder, it can take a while for a lo's tummy to get used to it.

We find the ready made cartons make Emily more sick. We use Apatamil as Cow & Gate made her really sick, she brought up the whole feed.

I thought the ready made was thicker, than the powder, worse to wash of bibs too.

Dont want to sound partonising but are you making it up correctly?

we used cartons up until alfie was about 7-8 weeks, switched him over to powder and he would only drink a couple oz of powdered but when he was having cartons hed polish 5oz. Hed also be unsettles on powdered apparently though due to the consistency of the ready made which is really thin, bubble free and creamyier alot of babies prefer it (i rang aptamil helpline) i kept on trying him with it and eventually he got used to it and now takes it with no problems. Keep on trying hun.

Yep, followed the instructions to the letter. She fussed for a long time at the same time the following evening after her usual amount of ready made formula. So, rather embarrassingly, after she's done this for the third evening in a row, I've come to he conclusion that she is simply hungrier at 8pm! She normally takes 6oz but she's just scoffed 8oz of powdered formula with no fuss. In fact, she's spark out.

Mystery solved I think!

Fran was like that too - she was hungrier when she had her feed in the middle of the night so we starting making bigger bottles for that and the one before - now she is starting to sleep longer at night and I get more sleep :happydance:

When my lo was on SMA she always preferred the ready made! It didn't agree with her at all though so we swapped over to aptimal.

My lo has always been hungrier at night too :)
