I'm 6 wks, 4 days based on LMP. I've had very few typical 1st tri symptoms here and there - a couple of waves of sickness, a couple of days of regular bathroom stops.

Last week I started experiencing a really intense pain in my left shoulder - at the top. The intense pain lasted a day, the following day it was more of a dull pain, it then went away for a couple of days and now has come back again as a dull pain. I've read shoulder pain could mean ectopic pregnancy? I discovered I had an infection a while ago (was treated at the time) that is renowned for causing problems with fertility and ectopics so now I'm really worried this is what's happening. I've not had any cramps or bleeding at all.

From what I've read, the shoulder pain is caused by internal bleeding. Is it possible to have the shoulder pain as the only symptom of EP, or does it usually only occur alongside bleeding and cramps?

I have left a message with my midwife for her to call me but any input you have in the meantime would be much appreciated.

When I was pregnant with Coralie I actually had the exact same thing happen to me with the shoulder pain etc. I spoke to my Doctor and he said it would be very unlikely for shoulder pain to to be my only symptom. I can't remember exactly how he described but basically it was that internal bleeding was literally the last symptom you'd get. Something like, if you had an ectopic, then firstly you'd be likely to spotting , then severe abdominal pain on one side (and I do mean severe - remember to get to internal bleeding your fallopian tube would be ripping open!) and then you'd have internal bleeding. You wouldn't feel it in your shoulder until it hit your abdomen and you'd most likely have passed out by then. I probably haven't explained any of that very well, but he really did put my mind at rest about the whole thing.

:hugs:

Thank you so much Louppey - that's exactly what I needed to hear!

I've had zero bleeding (not even any spotting) and no cramps whatsoever so it sounds as though the shoulder pain is probably completely unrelated to the pregnancy. It just felt so painful and a pain that I don't recall experiencing before that I immediately turned to Google and started freaking out

The sooner I can have this 12 week scan, the sooner I can start believing this is really happening and relax a little!

Thanks again!

No pregnant woman should be allowed near google, EVER. It's the devils work I swear :haha:

He did give me an explanation for the shoulder pain, but honestly I cannot remember for the life of me what it was because it was more like a symptom than anything to worry about iykwim? I think he suggested rolling my head from side to side slowly to relieve it but I could be wrong.

Roll on 12 weeks hey?!

It can't come soon enough! I'm tempted to book a private scan for earlier reassurance.

Either way, I must try and stay away from Google in the meantime.... :haha:

I use google, but I will take everything with a massive pinch of salt.

I've booked an early scan, no way I can wait til 12 weeks!! I started poas at 7 dpo, i'm not the most patient :haha:

If it helps, i know someone who had an etopic, and the only symptom they had was a really bad ( un-bareable ) pain in their stomach.

It was the sort of the pain that you phone an ambulance for, pregnant or not.
