reasurance needed - 5 wet nappies in an hour and a screaming baby

Thanks guys did not mean to cause a debate ;)

another question then is it worth giving hungry baby milk then at night?

When my LO was 2 days old he was really constipated so when I rang up to ask what to do they told me to give 1oz of cool boiled water! Does that mean I've done something to his health!? I'm actually a little worried now :(

That's crazy - a newborns stomach is only 1oz big.

It's helpful for everyone to have seen/thought/talked about it so help and information is shared.

As far as I'm aware... hungry baby milk is for babies older than 4 or 6 months? I'm not very well informed on it, so I could be wrong... but I'm pretty sure it's not for new babies.

We are starting Oliver on 8pm bottle on hungry baby milk.

I dont know what formula you use... but we use cow and gate and it says it is suitable from birth. and im sure the aptimal is as well xx

If baby is having colic/tummy trouble then dont give hungrier baby milk. It is harder to digest (especially for very small babies) and will most likely end in you and him getting less sleep as he will be awake all night crying with stomach discomfort and then he may well become dehydrated as he will be 'full' for longer than he naturally should be and therefore not getting enough liquid in the form of formula (with lots of water in it!) So yeah, hungrier baby milk is basically designed to be harder to digest and therefore tricks the babys system into not being ABLE to eat for longer (sometimes) Small babies need milk thats easy to digest and kind to thier little tummies not thick stuff thats purposefully designed to be harder to digest.
Its not possible to "feed too much" to a small baby...I have no idea where that notion comes from? If a baby is hungry then the baby is hungry, feeding every 2 hours is perfectly normal, especially in growth spurt area...that applies to both FF and BF equally.
If baby has taken too much for stomach size they will throw up what they have no space for, as such they may cry for food in an hour or two but there is absolutely no harm in giving them more formula when they are hungry and more formula is a MILLION times better than water.

thanks guys :) MW wanted me to feed the baby 100ml each feed but last 2 days she has stopped at 80ml but waking more regularly. We measured her today and she has gone from 52cm long to 56-57cm so shes definatly growing :) Still crying with her tummy and having a mad screaming fit for a few hours but having had some sleep today i feel i can cope a little better. Looks like she wants to have a poo every 2 days so will see if she has one tomorrow if not i am going to call the MW and get her to show me this tummy massage trick she did :)

Hungry baby stuff back in the box :)

You can look up the tummy massage best on youtube, just put in 'baby massage colic'.

You rub clockwise from about 10 o'clock round to 6 o'clock.

YES!!!

im not being funny... but if the formulas and the way the HV and MW's are telling us to feed our babies are wrong why do they tell us to do it?

Oliver has always gone 4 hours between feeds and yes some times he cries for more food and i give it to him... like this morning feed him at 7.30am and he only took 90ml and then he took 150 ml at 10. and is now asleep again i can garentee that he will go back to his 4 hours and then six hours tonight.

and as for the hungry baby milk... My HV told me to give it to him as one feed because he was cluster feeding from 6pm to 10pm and kept being sick so HV said to try him on it to see if he would take it and then keep it down. I was also told NOT to give it to him EVERY feed as i will end up with an obese baby.
My cousin on the other hand has twins that are 8 weeks old and gives them hungry baby milk for every feed and they are just fine.

unfortunately HVs and MWs dont know everything. They are rarely completely up to date on recommendations and tend to need to fall back on training they received years beforehand which is normally out of date. Many HVs and MWs have too busy a schedule to stay 100% up to date.
Many info they give out is wrong/inaccurate and sometimes potentially harmful (such as giving a small baby 1oz of water) and no advise given by them should be followed through without proper research being done by the parent beforehand. I know we are told to trust these people but you actually cant.

you also need to be careful about some of the 'advice' given out on some forums

hence the need to research things properly for oneself....regardless of where you get the info

Very true. The worst and the best of HV/MW/Grandmothers advice is routinely retold without further verification of its accuracy.
