This thread isn't meant to cause offense or arguments it's a genuine question.

My friends midwife told her to try 1 glass of red wine, spicy food and sex to induce labour.

I've been anti alcohol all pregnancy and have not touched a drop...wondering if 1 glass of red wine this late on would do any harm?

Or if anyone knows any facts/studies or if this is safe?

My moms doctor had actually told her this, but it was more from the context of making anxious soon to be moms relax. All the stress hormones of building anxiety can inhibit labor so I believe that was the basis behind his suggestion, not because of wine actually jump starting anything. Interested to see if other people have a take on it though!

I usually go on nhs advice and NICE guidelines are 1-2 units a week in pregnancy none in first 3 months if you choose to drink. I am pretty sure one small glass 2 days overdue won't kill me.

Oh hell yeah - a glass of wine sounds bloody good to me! As unexpected said the NICE guidelines are 1-2units a week and I've not yet seen any evidence that alcohol at that level is harmful (especially if it would be your first glass during the pregnancy!).

I think the worst that'll happen is i'll be a bit tipsy as i haven't drank anything for 40 weeks LOL!!!

I haven't heard of this before, its definitely something I will try though.. I haven't had a drink throughout my pregnancy, so one small glass won't hurt xx

My aunt was also told this. She has 1 glass of red wine, ate a whole pineapple AND had a curry and went into labour that night lol!!

I've already tried pineapple, sex, nipple stimulation and nothings worked so I figure I have nothing to loose here lol!

im so reday to go into labour, unfortunatly i know from experience it will only happen when it wants to.
4 years ago when i was having my daughter i tried everything, walked evry day up and down hills, tried castor oil, drank a glass of wine (resulting in horrid heart burn) ate spicey food and had sex as 4 times a day, i tried all this for 3 weeks...i was 1cm dialated at 36 weeks, went to 4 cm dialated by 38 weeks and when i finaly went to the hospital on her due date i was 6 cm, but had very mild contractions. it was almost like that whole 3 weeks i was having contractionc my body managed to ignore them to the point that i was barely feeling them. dr's broke my water and she was born 20 mins later....

ive started having contractions, very regular for 3 day now...starting every 30 mins in the morning and every 10 mins by night then sleep them off and start over again in the am. i want to start trying to get this baby out, we started having sex more but doesnt seem to help the conractions, i find they are less strong after the fact.
anyways, i too am on the journey to find what works cause time is not moving fast enough!!!
good luck to you.

Ahh I hate red wine, sure some Baileys wouldn't be the same? ;-) I've not had any alcohol this preg, but am def wanting the baby here now..

the idea of drinking right now actually legitimately grosses me out. i wouldnt do it for that reason and because i don't want to drink at all while pregnant.. doesnt make me feel good, can't make baby feel much better.

I think it's just desperation and a way to keep my mind occupied by trying things.

I absoloutley refused the castor oil option cos I've heard it can be very dangerous.

I will only try natural ways that I've researched and a glass of red wine seems to be regarded as ok.

I'm just so fed up. He's always been nearly 2 weeks ahead on dates since my dating scan so figured he'd be here early but no such luck.

I've had no symptoms, no twinges, no mucus plug and not one braxton hick or a mild contraction so I have no idea what to look out for even lol.

It grosses me out too. I don't even like red wine!! I just want to have one glass in the hopes it brings on labour.

This far on I can't imagine 1 glass doing much harm.

I haven't touched a drop in 40 weeks and have followed every other single rule, and I wont try any dangerous options like castor oil either.

Go for it! I've been having a glass of red wine once a week since about 20 weeks and the midwife is totally happy with that. She says I can have double that safely, in fact - as per NHS guidelines. I don't know about it inducing labour but it's definitely not dangerous!

Mmmm I would love one but after 38 weeks of nothing I would probably get a little tipsy, by coincidence I would probably go into labour and turn up at the hospital half cut, won't be allowed any pain relief and get frowned upon by every midwife lol, that's enough to stop me from trying it :haha:

Some midwifes say no alcohol at all and some actually recommend it lol!! Or say theres no harm etc.

I dont think they'd judge you for having a glass to bring on labour, but at the same time I do see where your coming from!

I do feel hypocritical in some ways cos I've been anti any alcohol or breaking any rules whilst pregnant. (anti alcohol in the sense I wouldnt drink it incase of harm but I dont judge anyone who does)

But I'm fairly sure 1 glass of red wine won't do me or baby any harm and at this point i'm desperate.

It's more of the not been allowed pain relief lol, suppose I could take the rest of the bottle with me :haha:

The baby's full term, you're not going to give it Fetal Alcohol syndrome with one glass of wine :) The placenta will filter it.

Entirely up to you, it's probably more to relax you than anything. It's not going to actually start anything, but being relaxed, well, that's good medicine :)

Haha! That's a good point!

Didn't think of that, hmm, I think I'm still going to try 1 small glass cos I have a feeling it may not work anyway but at least then I've tried lol.
