Reflux, AND a cows milk protein allergy?? Related?

We have gone thru a nightmare period past few weeks. Baby has now been diagnosed with a reflux for which he is on gaviscon, ranitidine and domperidone. Its helped a little but he suffers from continual dry skin and constipation. Our health visitor just came to conclusion that its possible with reflux, dry skin and persistent bunging up that he is quite possibly suffering a cows milk protein allergy. To be sure she wanted us to try comfort milk first before trying a hydrolised prescription formula. He is now suffering from horrendous nasal congestion which is being written off as a cold ( actually apnea in nature and horrific some nights) but the paediatricians weve been referred to arent worried???

Im so confused here, does anyone have a similar situation? Ive just bought aptamil comfort milk and will start it tomorrow to see if it helps with al the grunting and constipation (esp at night!!) xx

My LO had reflux and a cows milk intolerance.

He was on the Gaviscon but it gave him really bad constipation so thats probably whats giving your LO it too. We put him on instant carobel powder which is made by cow and gate. It is completely natural, unlike gaviscon, but does the same thing. In my opinion it works better. You can go into your local boots and they'll order it in for you, your gp might be able to get it on prescription. If you change him to that you'll probably notice a difference in his poo in a couple of days and hopefully he'll feel much better.

My LO was on both medicines and Nutramigen 1 which is a hydrolysed formula. He now just on the carobel and Nutramigen and totally off the medicines. If your LO has a serious allergy he would probably have to be on an amino based formula such as Neocate but they like to try the hydrolysed ones first as they are less expensive.

Why does the HV want to try comfort milk? Has he always been constipated or just since the Gaviscon?

Hi there, quite reassured to hear someone else is in a similar situation, im so exhausted with the situation. He has always been constipated, from the beginning, doing water feeds every few days etc so no doubt gaviscon did indeed it even worse. If the comfort milk doesnt help she believes it is indeed a cow milk protein allergy, this carobel is exactly the same as gaviscon? Worth a try!! X

Yep, they can be related. Holly had silent reflux and has CMPI, the gp said the reflux was caused bu the CMPI, which is apparently common. Her reflux symptoms disappeared once she went on an amino acid based formula. While she was on a hydrolysed formula, she needed ranitidine, but the digestive problems such as constipation remained. Gaviscon made her worse but she wasn't a puker, so not sure how it would have helped anyway. Carobel is worth a try, it seems to work for a lot of people. x x

Yes they can be related, my LO has both. For us treating the CMPI didnt help the reflux, only Losec worked for us. But Elecare formula did clear up the gastric, skin and nasal issues

Alexa has cmpa and reflux and is on Nuitramigan and Gaviscon and is a lot better than she was so I definatly think it is all related

My boy is 4 months old now and suffers from Silent Reflux and CMPA. He's on Domperidone, Ranitidine, and Neocate. The reflux got diagnosed early but the hospital gave us the wrong amount of medication to give him so from 4wks to 9 wks he still screamed in pain. The CMPA only got diagnosed 3 weeks ago when i went to A&E and refused to leasve until they believed me. 3 weeks later he's a different boy. They are definitely related. My little boy has milk protein allergy and reflux, we have ad a horrendous 2 weeks and our Dr referred us for urgent assessment at the hospital yesterday where they diagnosed this. They have given him Nutramigen lipi and he is on gaviscon for the reflux but they said are thinking of putting him on ranitidine. Fingers crossed this sorts him out...
