My daughter is 4 days old and I think she has reflux :( she is just constantly wanting a feed for comfort and then vomiting it all back up including episodes of projectile vomit. She won't go in her Moses at night because she vomits straight awY and then screams (we've tried raising the Moses upright and wrapped 2 blankets on either side but doesn't work) so me and hubby have to take turns in holding her so were getting hardly any sleep! (any advice?) my DS had silent reflux which was hell and took 6 months for anyone to listen and finally prescribe domperidone and omeprazole which worked a treat. We tried the gaviscon with him but it's so difficult with bf as you have to mix it with a load of water and find a way to give it - in the end we had to use bottles with just the water & gaviscon but it made him extremely constipated and then we had to give lactulose for that!!!! Anyway...has anyone got experience of reflux and what meds do they take for it and how long did it take to work for them to stop vomiting? My DS was silent so he was never sick with it. We've got an appointment with the dr today which I'm totally expecting to be fobbed off like we were with DS for months :(

my experience is with silent refulx and while I did realise something was wrong towards the end of the 1st week we jsut had to keep an eye on him for a few weeks as a few days isn't a very good indicator of a gastro problem (according to our speicalist) which is why our dr said a few weeks of observation to get the baby a bit more used to it's surroundings and being out in the open, allowing him time to get over the shock of birth.

In hindsight it was shit advice because he does have reflux and it was finally diagnosed by 5 weeks...gaviscon, then ranitidine, and finally domperidone and omeripozole (spelling is wrong sorry) on the other hand if it was just shock from suddenly being fed and getting used to milk or whatever and I'd have medicated him without needing too I'd have never forgiven myself. So I would personally give it a few days and then take her to the gp and start from there....it's always a bit of a fight to get them to the specialist point for some so the earlier the better I say.

My youngest has reflux, definitely a non silent type! We went to see a consultant about it who put me on a specific diet (I'd recommend trying to cut out all dairy, even the hidden stuff!) and put her on omeprazole. Both these things have made a huge difference. Especially the dairy in our case...as I put off starting the medication, I am not sure if the difference we saw with that is down to the meds or a combination of the meds and tum maturity. I have literally just trialled a little dairy to see how she manages (half a bounty yesterday!) and we have an appointment to discuss how long she will be on omep.

Gaviscon did very little for us, too...just made her constipated!!

Dairy makes a huge difference...and eggs and soya can also help (maybe just try dairy first!) If symptoms persist, I'd badger your gp for a referral and medication.

If you've any questions, feel free to ping :hugs:

Ps she still spits up, but a lot less and smiles while doing so
