Odd question.... Someone has mentioned to me that we need to register our intention to marry with the council of the borough that we live in. I had a look on the website and there is nothing about it, and only about registering if you are foreign nationals or it is a civil partnership. I did try and ring them, but there was a 45 minute phone queue, so gave up....

So, can anyone clarify whether or not we have to do anything before we get married in terms of registering it, or if we don't what we have to do afterward as she also confused me alot with that aswell. :dohh:

Thanks in advance. :flower:

If you're getting married in a church then you'll have your banns read in services for at least a fortnight before the wedding. If you're planning on having a civil wedding ceremony then you'll need to get an appointment with the registrar to register your intent to marry. If you live in the same council area then you'll have to go in together. Otherwise you go in separately to register your intent in the council area in which you live. It costs around about £30 each to do this and it can be done up to a year before the wedding but no later than 15 full days before it. If the venue you state changes you have to re-register and pay again. Basically you give the registrar all the information about yourself- name, date of birth, occupation, father's name, occupation-, your partner gives the same information and you give them details about the wedding- date, venue- and sign saying that it's all correct. You'll both need 2 forms of ID (passport, driving license, etc). That will then be displayed on a notice board at the registry office for 15 days to give people the chance to view it and report anything untoward- e.g. they know you're closely related to each other or that one partner is already married- and then they can say that it's OK for you to marry. It's just a legal formality that makes getting married just that little bit more expensive!! More information about it here: https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Marriagesandcivilpartnerships/DG_175717

Hope that helps!!

Thanks for that!! :D
Best apply for passports then, as at the moment we both just have driving licences....

You can use bills with your address on- like a paper tv license or an electric bill or something like that. It doesn't have to be a passport. I don't have a form of ID other than my passport so I just took along our TV license!! You'll get a letter saying what you need when you make an appointment!
