On Friday the 19th in the evening I started spotting, more than just a little bit, so I went to the ER. At this time the gestational sac measured 4 weeks 6 days according to the ultrasound which I believe to be correct. I was not cramping. ER doc said it was extremely early to tell anything at that time since my cervix was closed and the ultrasound showed an empty gestational sac. My HCG level was 1742.
On Monday I went to my OB for follow-up. Still spotting, no cramping. The NP said my cervix was still closed and there was an irritated spot on my cervix which could explain the spotting. They did another HCG check, so almost 3 days since the 1st one. My numbers were either 2598 or 2958. I heard two numbers... Still, either way my numbers did not double over almost a 3 day period. So they scheduled a follow-up ultrasound for Wednesday the 24th.
On Wednesday the ultrasound showed an empty gestational sac measuring 5w 1d and I was told I am going to miscarry. The words were never said but clearly this would be considered a blighted ovum. I decided to go to my family practice Dr. that evening for another HCG check, so this would be a 2 day spacing. My numbers were 4082. Again not doubled.
I am really not holding on to hope anymore. But I do have a few things that make me hold off a D&C.
1) I have a retroverted uterus, and not by a little bit. It is quite a bit retroverted. I have read this can make it extremely hard to see anything in a gestational sac before 8 or 9 weeks. It is like looking for a dot on a paper from a parallel view. The Dr. never even looked at my stuff. The U/S tech spent less than 5 minutes doing the U/S and told the Dr. the results.
2) I have read that if you have two ultrasound technicians measure the same gestational sac they can be off by as much as 20% in their measurements from each other.
Fast forward to today. I am barely spotting. Still no cramping. I think I have enough bad signs to indicate that this is likely a blighted ovum. HCG rising but not doubling (normal with a blighted ovum), sac didn't grow enough, and nothing seen in the sac. It is tough to hold out hope with these indicators. I think I may be out, sigh.
I do have 3 wonderful children and I count my blessings for them. We would like one more still. So when my husband is done with his military training and is back in 5 months we will try again.
