I think Rowan is a girls name. Sterling could probably suit both, especially if it's only going to be a middle name.

Rowan/Rowen for either boy or girl to me But some people like the A for girls and E for boys.
There was a thread on this in the names section back a bit - if you search under either of the two names you should find it.
I think the combination with Sterling seems more masculine though.
