my daughter is 16 weeks old and milk is no longer satisfying her. infact it gets to the point that she wakes up at 5am wanting more!
tried her with 1/4 of a rusk and she seems to enjoy it and it helps her sleep better coz her tummy is full(er)
just abt all the books i read say not to give babies solids till 6mnths but on the rusks packaging it says 4mnth+
any1 having the same probs or been thru this?
any answers will be appreciated! :) xx

Is she maybe having a growth spurt? 4 months one is a pretty big one!

Waking in the night with hunger at 4 months is still counted as normal behaviour.

I wouldn't give rusks personally. In fact, I'm not sure I'd give rusks at all, ever. They've been in so much trouble for the crap they put in them.

Rusks are full of sugar for a start, personally I wouldnt feed them to any age child. This age is typical growth spurt , usually you get a few days/week/s (varies baby to baby) of waking and being very hungry before it settles down again.
If you can just provide the extra milk she is asking for and reassess the situation in a couple of weeks.

when i was weaning Jack the recommendation was 4 months, that was 7 years ago and the 1st thing i fed him on was baby rice.

I know now that the recommendation is 6 months but there are some people out there that wean at 4 months because quite simply their baby isnt satisfied with just milk. I think its very much an individuals decision as they know their baby better than anyone ever could.

I have to say if my baby was going 1-2 hours and snaffling 9oz/6 bottles a day at 4 months, and then crying from not being satisfied, i would seriously think about weaning.

However if that were the case, i would use baby rice as apposed to rusks as the other ladies have said they are full of sugar but its your decision and your baby at the end of the day so what ever you feel comfy with and works for you is good:thumbup:

Connah had a growth spurt at 4 months but we still didnt start weaning til almost 6 months. IMO 4 months is a little early if there is no medical reason etc but each to their own :)

Maybe ask your HV advice x

I wouldnt give rusks unless there was a very serious reason at that age, eg extreme reflux due to milk intolerence etc your Lo may develop lots of allergies if you introduce solids that early!

my hv told me if giving rusks to get wheat free ones for an early age baby, also ive weaned morgan from 17wk hes been fine, try babyrice if ur wanting to give ur LO something eles, if there ready for weaning that is x

if you feel you need to wean I would use Baby rice and not rusks as they are full of sugar!

However waking again n night at 4 months is normal... they have a massive growth spurt as others have said

My family told me to give my LO rice at 4 months as he was feeind every 2 hours day and night, it lasted a couple of weeks but we rode it out and he was fine on milk until nearly 6 months

It could just be the 4 month growth spurt like the others have said. River is 4 months old and wakes for a bottle at 4am and i dont think its because she needs food, she needs milk. Its not nice getting up at 4am but oh well :)

I think rusks also have loads of sugar in so if you are going to start weaning porridge would probably be best but I personally wouldnt give it before bed time

Hi

When I had my first in January 1996 12 weeks was the age for weaning and my eldest was weaned at that age and he has grown up fine and healthy without any problems.

My 2nd was at the stage of waking every 2 hours at night and taking full bottles. I left it a few weeks in the hope that he would calm down but no, I had to wean him at 14 weeks. I started with baby rice, just a small amount and it did settle him. He then started to sleep 6 hours which was a great achievement at the time!

I had heard there is as much sugar in a Rusk as a jam donut but not sure if it is true! People obviously buy rusks because they have been around since I was a baby so must be popular.

I completely agree.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was true.
Most people have no idea about what is in things like rusks, so they buy them.
It's by no means only rusks that are the bad guys though, take a look at how much sugar is in a petit filou!

I was shocked at the sugar in kiddie yogurts like that

If you did want to give rusks, they do reduced sugar ones.

I just wouldn't give them, reduced sugar or full sugar, once LO is at an appropriate age for weaning there's millions of other, better foods to give instead.

A few spoons of solid isn't going to get LO going 12 hours a night again straightaway! I agree with others who posted about the growth spurt, totally natural and you'll get through it.

Personally I think you should do what you feel is right, you could hold off a few weeks & see how things are than?

I wud say if she is waking up coz she's hungry then give her milk. It will be a growth spurt and she will have some nights of needing fed but will stop again once the growth spurt slows down. I really wouldnt recommend rusks (ever not just at 4 months) they are packed full of sugar and are really bad for babies teeth etc. When u need to wean go for baby rice/porridge to start not rusks. Your LO will get used to the sweetness of the rusks and not want anything else. You also should only give food morning, lunch and dinner, babies shouldnt get any food before going to bed, it make sit hard for them to digest.
