Hi ladies,

This is my first post here so be gentle! OH and I have been trying for 8 months, this would be my 2nd and his 1st. We got an assessment done last week and got the results today:

Volume: 4ml
Count: approx 78 million
Mobility: 60% high/mid
Morphology: 4%

The Dr has advised that I go for testing as well but how bad are these results really? I don't really know what a 'normal' or 'good' result looks like and the Dr didn't give much comparison, apart from the fact that the morphology is low...but is it so low as to give us pretty much no chance? We're going to cut booze, switch to decaf coffee and OH takes Men's vitamins, will all this help?

Any advice you could give would be fab. Thank you so much!

Hi Laura! Honestly, when you read what other people have gone through with SA, anything is possible! I think your dh's count is excellent! As for the morphology; I can understand the concern. From what I've read, there seems to be 2 different types of morphology exam; one, is the WHO exam, which says that normal morphology should be over 30%, then there's the Kruger exam which is much more strict and says a normal morphology should be over 14%. I've read some women on here who have gotten pg on a 1% morphology! My own dh's morphology is 7% - no baby yet, but we're going to see a fertility doc next month. Anyway, my doctor says that (in your case) 4% of 78 million is still 3,120,000 - and you only need one! Try not to lose hope....I think your chances are excellent!

Best of luck!

Hi carreg,

My DH's result are very similar to that, his morphology is 5%, we have been ttc for 10 cycles now but i only have one tube, there is an article (i will try and find it) which suggests that new guidelines have been released saying that 5% morpology is normal !!! i will try and ind the link and put it on here for you to have a read.

https://infertilityblog.blogspot.com/2006/05/sperm-morphology-mythology.html this is the link, i hope it works. It is a very interesting read. :hugs:

My DH's morphology was 4%, motility 44%....it took us 16 cycles to pregnant. He cut out booze and started taking a vitamin reco'd my fertility specialist......we were just about to start cycle monitoring and I found out I was pregnant. So it does work. Morphology is a tricky thing. Who is to say what a "normal" sperm looks like. It's too reliant on the eye of the person examining it. I would say cut out booze, caffeine and start him on a multi as well as zinc.....and no hot showers.....a swim in cool water is always a good thing. It is possible honey. It happened for us.
The best of luck to you.....xx

Thank you everyone for the positivity and help :hugs:

hopefulfor09 - that is really good to hear, thank you. We have been 2 weeks now with no caffeine or alcohol and with OH taking a male multivitamin (with carnitine, argenine, selenium, zinc etc in) and an extra zinc supplement, plus him eating less and going to the gym more to shift some of his extra weight so I really hope that it makes a difference for us.

Thanks again ladies

Hi Carreg,

Which Multivitamin is your DH taking? I was just looking at buying 'Fertility Plus for Men' but not sure. And how long does he need to be taking it for as it's 88 pounds for 3 months!

Hi Imaan

He's just taking Tesco's Multivitamins for Men's Health (in a silver cardboard box) :haha:

I compared them with Wellman and they had exactly the same things in but were only £3.20 for 30 tablets, not about £9!!

Can't believe the price some companies charge for vitamins!

Ok... I shall go on a hunt for the silver boxed vitamins then :) thank you...

I know what you mean... Fertility Plus for men is like 88 pounds for a three-month supply! rediculous!

Hey laura I know there is a few ladies have their husband on fertilaid for men after geting a bad result and there were a big jump in the results when tested a 2nd time. I don't know if it works for every one but its worth a shot.

It was comforting to read the responses in this thread - especially hopefulfor09's story! We're on cycle 19 (sigh) and I've often wondered about DH's sperm results - how bad they were, etc. But they're similar to carreg's DH's - his motility is just worse (39%). Hopefully it will happen soon for us! Oh, and spuggle - sorry I think it was you who posted the link on the morphology mythology - thanks for that! :flower:

That result sound fine, 78 million thats quite impressive. my dh count was 53 million, 45% motility (only in grade b) and 8% morphology. Our doc said it was probably the reason we werent pregnant yet, needless to say dh was devestated but when we went to the fertility clinic we were told the results were fine because of the count being so high it counteracts the low motiliy and morphology,he actaully said 'well done' for having 53 million when the normal is 20 million so 78 million is excellent. I wouldnt worry too much about those results. Dh is now taking wellman conception and omega 3 fish oils from holland and barretts and cut out caffine to try and boost it even more.Have you had any tests? xx
