Well, bad news. Not terrible, but not great.

His sample was sub-optimal. He has plenty of :spermy:'s but the quality is low and the viscosity is too thick which is making it impossible for the :spermy:'s to swim through it. :cry:Chances are pregnancy won't be achieved the old fashioned way.

He said the only way I can get pregnant, it seems is through IUI or IVF.    DH's doctor is calling mine now and telling her everything.

DH's doctor also wants to repeat the sample in case this was just an isolated incident.

Oh hun :hugs:

Is that the first sample he has given? They must do a repeat sample and it must be 70-90 days after the first as it takes that long for :spermy: to mature - plus it will give them a better idea of whether it is 'real' or 'isolated'.

Did the FS give you any recommendations? I would have a look at diet/lifestyle changes as well as good multivits and maybe alternative therapies... We had awful results but they are slowly but surely improving. Never say never to natural ttc, but it's good to know that you have options in IUI and IVF...By Christmas there could be big improvements :hugs: :dust:

Yeah this was his first SA. I'm just so devastated atm. Maybe they'll improve but I'm so sick and tired of always being so hopeful just to have bad news come pouring down on me. I find it's always harder to pick myself up after it.

Thank you for your kind words. :hugs: Much appreciated

 not sure about the viscosity thing babe but just wanted to point out that my hubbys SA was terrible (less than 3% normal :spermy: ) and we were recommended to go for IUI...

We fell preg that very same cycle so its defo not the "be all and end all" that you might think it is :hugs: xxx

Hey Chris

I know how it feels - trying to be positve, something else crap happens and then you try and be more optimistic but it just gets harder and harder. This is a list of things i found on google..... damn google :happydance:

Get regular exercise: While you should avoid vigorous training programs, regular and moderate exercise helps you maintain a healthy body weight, helps control stress, and gives you a healthier overall body.

Perform relaxation exercises: Since infertility and life in general can be stressful, learn to relax. Stress is sometimes responsible for certain infertility problems such as hormonal problems.

Maintain a healthy weight: Not too under or overweight since weight influences estrogen and testosterone levels.

Watch your body temperature: Avoid vigorous exercise, hot tubs, and saunas since they raise the body temperature and may cause changes in ovulation and reduced sperm count.

Check for exposure to heavy metals: Heavy metal toxins may affect ovulation. A hair analysis can determine exposure.

I found you this which i kinda like and it sounds more positive....

Question: If a man has an abnormal viscosity count when semen analysis is performed, can it be treated and how? How does it affect fertility?

Comment: It would seem logical that increased viscosity would decrease fertility. However, there I do not know of any studies that substantiate this finding. A good medical history is important there may be unsuspected causes that be eliminated that would improve quality of the semen. It seems more important that the standard parameters studied (number, motility, and morphology) are most important. If viscosity is a problem, fertility may be increased by well-timed inseminations after sperm washing (IUI). No more than 3 inseminations are generally recommended before other causes of infertility are excluded. A logical question would be if use of Guafenesin (active ingredient of Robitussin) would help. Guafenesin has been suggested to improve cervical mucus. There is no scientific evidence of its effectiveness for this and I would not hold out hope for semen either, but give it a try.

Thank you that information helpedt!! :hugs: You're so sweet for googling that for me. You're the best! :hugs: :hugs: DH also said the FS said his quality was low...what exactly was low, the sperm quality or the semen quality he doesn't know. Leave it to men to get details! :dohh:

That's what my DH was like... 'oh i've got a low sperm count'... no numbers.. then they say 1 million and i was gobsmacked - he hears the word 'million' and thinks that's awesome  bless him!!!
