So DH went to the doctors, to have the results explained the dr's still says it's bad but i'm not so sure.

Count
DH, 50x106. Normal results are, 20x106, so he has a sperm count 1.5 times higher than it needs to be classed as normal.

Motility
DH, 46% or more. Normal results are, 50% or more (barely lower than ideal)

Morphology
DH, 20% normal. Normal results are, 30% or more normal (lower than ideal)

So motility is barely lower than the ideal, and morphology is officially low. However my thinking is does it really matter if it's a bit low as he has 1.5 times more sperm that the average sample. So am i right in thinking that his morphology is equivalent to 50% normal if he had the the lower sperm count (count that is still classed as normal)?

I hope that makes sense, what do u think?

Hi, I've been doing a bit of research on this as I was confused by DH normal morphology reading which according to the tests came within the reference ranges and is nornmal, but seems really low to me - I found the following online - hope it helps.

https://www.ivf1.com/morphology

'For many years, infertility specialists used criteria that were established by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, several recent studies found that the WHO criteria was not very good at distinguishing fertile men from infertile men.

For this reason, many of us have now switched to a different criteria known as the "Strict Morphology". It has also been referred to by the name of the doctor who developed it, Thinus Kruger, and is often called the Kruger morphology.

The concept behind strict morphology, as the name suggests, is to evaluate sperm much more closely than we had in the past and have a stricter determination for what is considered normal. For example, older criteria would consider a man normal if he had 30-50% normal sperm. A normal percentage under Kruger's criteria is 14% normal.'

https://www.infertilitydoctor.com/male_infertility/male_eval.htm -

Semen Analysis-WHO Minimal Standards of Adequacy

Ejaculate volume----------1.5-5.0cc (milliliters)

Sperm Concentration----->20 million sperm per cc

Motility--------------------->50%

Forward Progression------2 (scale 1-4)

Morphology----------------30% normal forms (WHO criteria)

Morphology---------------->4% normal forms (Krueger criteria)

Do you know what criteria they used to test morphology? I wonder why one statement say 14% as being normal and then 4% being normal - now I'm getting confused?

No idea chick, how confusing. But only ever heard of WHO till know so i guess WHO. XXX

I don't think those results are too bad. If DH isn't on any male fertility vits then there is a good chance if he starts taking them that those levels will improve.

Also, has he just had the 1 tests? Most Drs like at least 2 tests because they can vary quite a bit.

I would think that because the count is higher, that it would cancel out the low motility and morphology.

On my DH's SA results, they've all said that 5% or above is ok.

Thanks FJL, to be honest his gp has been totally useless, he hasnt even offered another test? Or offered any medication, were totally confused. I so agree with what your saying about the count tho, however his gp wont offer us them words of comfort he just says it's not good, and then wont re test, or offer any meds. I'm very frustrated by him. X

I think you should definitely change doctors. He sounds extremely unhelpful.

The next step is always a 2nd test. If things look bad from there, then discussing options is the next thing to do.

Your so right, he goes to a different dr to me to, and it's far from our house to, he is reluctant to move tho. Very frustrating, think i may need to add a little more pressure. X

Hey Daisy

Wellman do good vits for chaps and also 1000mg of vit c per day for men is supposed to be good to improve everything.

Sorry your doc wasn't as helpful as he should have been. I know we were told 20-99 million was within normal limits and anything under or above that was considered 'abornmal' for want of a better word.

If you can't get in to see another doc then get him to go back to his docs and request a second test or at least a full explanation of what has happened - his doc probably doesn't really know which is why he is avoiding it! Hopefully if they are happy to re-test him, get him on some vits and see what happens in a month?

Fingers crossed hun x
