Cheeky Sainsbury's have put Aptamil first milk up to £8.49!!!!

I thought all shops had to sell them at the same price? They're always £7.90!

yeh vat has gone up.............but prondfoot sell sma for a £1 dearer than boots/morrisons !! x

I paid £7.90 yest for it from Boots. Saying that though, when we had the awful snow I could only get to a Lloyds chemist and it was £9.10!!!

I know- I was shocked. I just assumed it would be the same price everywhere.

7.90 in boots........sma 2 £6 !! in morrison x

VAT and a general rise in food prices means that virtually everything has gone up this past couple of months.

My weekly shop in Sainsbury's for example -

Bread - was 69p, now 75p
Milk - was 1.69, now 1.76
Dog biscuits - was 99p, now 1.24!

Thankfully Earl#s SMA has stayed pretty level at 7.25

And it can be within 20% of the RRP but not below, and no special offers allowed on 1st stage.

It has also gone up to £8.49 in Tesco!

I didn't think that baby milk was subject to VAT and that was why you never get clubcard or nectar points on it?

Me thinks the shops are just being sneaky!

Without sounding like a pikey, will this mean that they up the value of milk tokens?

Yes VAT has gone up but on £7.90 it would put it up to £8.09 not £8.49!
I thought VAT was added to baby milk as it's not seen as essential and the govenment want to encourage breast feeding?
Having said that I haven't given it too much thought, I just buy the stuff.
I noticed when I was doing my sainsburys home shop yesterday it had gone up so I switched back to Asda where it is still (I hope) £7.90

Oh dear lack of sleep is making me waffle now. Sorry:wacko:

Went to Morrisons today and it was still £7.90. Hmmm. But I went to the Co-op last week and it was £8.50, was not impressed! x

The VAT system is random and complex lol

'Products such as skimmed milk powder and baby milk formula are considered to be zero-rated' https://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/vfoodmanual/VFOOD7660.htm

and below some interesting night reading lol - what is and what is not vatable and at what rate!!

god its so expensive! my co-op doesnt even sell it. Im gonna go to asda on wed and get like 5 tubs. stock up before they go up! its ridic! and that just reminded me i need to ring about the tonkens, not had any in ages!

Zero-rate applies to all 'essential foodstuffs' so baby milk is included in this bracket. The problem is that the RPI is always judged in Jan, so if supermarkets and retailers are going to raise prices then now is the time and EVERYTHING is going up, so hang onto your hats and your budgets. The BBC have reported that the retailers have seen a drop in sales in Jan, and with all the sales etc in December, they've got to make their money back now.

Tesco's have gone up to that also. Dont even get blimming discount on formula either

Wow - I order soy formula from tesco pharmacy and the lady who sld it to me said this is gonna cost you a lot! I thought oh gosh, how much is this stuff gonna be - it was £8.83 - so not much different to normal formula! although I guess it will go up too!
