I've got my transvaginal scan tomorrow, and I'm dreading it. Really not looking forward to being 'probed', but I guess I'm going to have to start getting used to it.

I'm not really sure what they're looking for though. My GP referred me as we've been TTC for over a year. I'm assuming they're looking for signs of PCOS or endo??

Either way, I work in the hospital where I'm having the scan done, so I have access to the system. I'll be able to read my results after they have been reported on. I will update you all when I can.

Anyway, wish me luck...

Any soothing or reassuring experiences with transvaginal scans are very welcome....

i have had one of these and they are not that bad at all, really nothing to worry about hun, hope u get on ok xx

I had one today - think smear and its not as bad as that. The only thing I found uncomfortable was when they were pushing to the side to look at the ovaries, more uncomfortable on one than the other.
Apparently they can do it as an ultrasound, if you aren't happy with the internal, but I think the internal is more accurate

Good luck

oh i think i am going to have one of those in January ...
will be thinking of you hon:hugs:

I've had tonnes of them (well, about 10 LOL) and will get a heap more done with my next cycle too, and honestly, they aren't bad at all. I'd much prefer to get one of these anyday than have a pap smear.

The lady where I get mine done is used to me now and I insert the probe myself and then she moves it around. So perhaps you could ask to do that to make you more comfortable?

Thats great that you will have access to your results so soon too!

Do you have to be on a certain CD for this scan? If not, then they're most likely looking for uterine abnormalities and cysts etc on your ovaries. If they're doing it on a certain CD, they may be looking for other things such as how thick your lining normally is etc.

Good luck, you'll be fine I promise :hugs:

Thanks for everyone's replies - I feel a bit more relaxed about it now :hugs:

FJL - no, I'm not having this done on a certain CD. The scan was orginally booked for next week, but that is when AF is due and although the hospital said that they would still do the scan, I wasn't entirely comfortable with that.

One of the perks of working for the NHS was being able to bring my appointment forward slightly!!

Good luck for today hun. It isn't as bad as a smear and you'll probably not feel much discomfort. Great that you can nosey at your results early ... lucky you.

Don't suppose you can access files held at other hospitals can you??? heehee

:hugs:

I felt exactly the same! just ask them to be gentle with you!

Good luck my darling, hope you get some answers xx

Hiya Autumn :)

These probes are really nothing to worry about.. I have had several (the worst was when I had my period, it was so nasty and the woman did it like she did it all the time urgh !!).. it is painless.. they tend to slip a condom on and you wont feel anything, only when they push down on your tummy. Its a great way to detect cysts or irregularities in your repro system :)

Best of luck - it will be over before you know it :)

TTxx

Hi Autumn, I to have quite a few of these done probably about 8 or so and they arn't too bad at all. Feels a little odd at first but just relax and trust that your in safe hands!

I've had 3 of these now and they aren't too bad and I find smears painful. The worst part is when they are first inserting it but if you relax it helps and once its in its ok just a bit uncomfortable when they move it to the side to look at your ovaries. You should be able to see the screen too which its quite interesting and I find helps me take my mind of what she is doing as I am fasinating by my insides!!!

How did you get on hun?
Hope everything went ok

Hope it went OK. I'm having my 1st TVUSS on the 16th so I am eager to hear how it was for you!

Hey girls, thanks for all your replies :hugs:

The scan was fine - you were all right. It was so much better than having a smear test.

As for the results.... well, I have already printed the report off, so I'll just re-type it here:

'TV scan with patient's consent. Uterus and left ovary appeared normal. The right ovary however was positioned very close to the lateral wall of the uterus and there was free fluid on the right side.
The free fluid may represent infection and the position of the ovary may suggest endometriosis.
A gynae referral is suggested for this patient.'

So yes. Not great, but could be worse I suppose. I really didn't think that endo could be a possibility as my periods are not particularly really heavy or painful. I don't have mid-cycle spotting etc either. Who knows though.

Anyway, I'm going to my GP's first thing in the morning with this report and asking for a referral. Once I get that, I can use my contacts in the gynae department to hopefully get a quicker appointment.

I spoke to one of the gynae secretaries earlier, and she spoke to one of the consultants about my scan results. He said that it isn't anything to worry about and that it can be sorted. I might have to have a laparoscopy done or something??

Anyway, luckily I work in the inpatient office, so if I do have to have some kind of surgery, I know all the right people.

This is definitely one of the perks of working for the NHS!!

I had a bit of a cry this morning after I got the results. However, I know that things could be A LOT worse, so I'm hopeful that this can be sorted.

Will be in this section with you lovely ladies for a while longer I think though.

I haven't actually had a fertility appointment yet. My GP referred me for the scan. DH has had a SA done, which came back fine. I've also had day 21 tests, which also came back fine. I got referred for the transvaginal back in June, after begging my GP!!

I'll be going down the gynae/fertility appointment route at the hospital now.

xx

I'm pleased that physically everything went well for you :hugs:

I hope you get more answers at your next appointment xx
