I got a call from the hospital today - I had the combined NT scan and blood tests last week - and despite being 28 and healthy with no family history of Downs I have been told I am high risk with a 1:10 chance of the baby being born with down syndrome. We are going to the hospital tomorrow to have the CVS (i am 12+3) and I am absolutely terrified. Has anyone else been through this and can share their experience? Thanks x

My post is probably a little late to reassure you on the CVS itself, but incase it's not - the test is not a big deal. Yes it's a little uncomfortable but it's over really quickly. They will have an ultrasound image on a screen which you may be able to see, so that they can be sure the needle goes nowhere near the baby, and you might prefer not to look at it. Also, the needle is quite long and again you might prefer not to look at it. I had my eyes shut throughout. The emotional aspects waiting for the results are the awful bit.

As for the risk, it's such a worrying time. I had a 1:15 with this pregnancy and the CVS gave me the all clear, much to my immense relief. With 1:10 you have a 90% chance that the baby has no chromosome problems whatsoever.

Are you having the fast results (usually 2-3 working days) for the 3 main abnormalities (Downs, Edwards and Pataus syndromes)?

Well, yesterday turned out to be a very confusing day. I went to the hospital for the CVS as planned, met the consultant and talked through all the pros/cons etc. She got me up on the bed to start the ultrasound and within 30secs of seeing the image she said.....'just as I thought, I need to look at the other images that they took last week, i'll be back in a minute" - as I'm sure you can imagine I assumed all sorts and was in pieces - I was already finding the whole thing hard enough and couldn't even look bring myself to look at the image - anyway, she comes back and tells me that she thinks they measure the wrong thing last week when they were doing the nuchal as it had gone from 3.2mm to 1.6mm and apparently it shouldn't drop by that much - she then suggested and I agreed, to do the entire screening again to get another risk result before proceeding with the CVS. So here I am, waiting again - who knows, maybe i'll be back in the same place again next week but for now I am hopeful that the amended results will be low.

I'm really pleased to hear that you got the all clear from your CVS

Thanks again for your kind words x

Blimey, that's some mistake! I have heard of that happening once before though. 3.2mm is right at the top end of the normal scale (over in some hospitals) and 1.6mm is excellent, so I would definitely be expecting your risk to drop significantly. When will you hear?

Got my results yesterday......new risk is less than 1 in 10000!!! Couldn't be more different, have been told that's the best it could be so am soooo relieved. We're going to the hospital on Tuesday to meet with the consultant to figure out how they could have got it so wrong- am annoyed that we were put through such emotional stress for nothing but more just pleased that someone figured it out before it was too late!! x

That's great news, so pleased that you had such a good result too, wow. I hope after you've seen the consultant you can forget about this and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

Hi there-- Just saw your posts and am SO GLAD that everything turned out all right! :happydance: I had the NT test along with bloods and the NT was ok, but bloods show a possible concern. Going in on the 2nd for a level 2 u/s and am sure hoping they tell me the same type of good news!! :)
