I was feeding my LO on Friday night and he unlatched really quickly (completely unusual for him) but just seemed fine so I put him down on the bed and went to brush my teeth thinking he'd probably want more in a minute anyway.
Come back, a couple of mins later to find Ally throwing up blood! And lots of it! I called NHS direct in a mega panic and said I wasn't sure if it was coming from me or him. They contacted the local out of hrs drs and we were told to go straight up to the out of hrs centre (at the hospital) to be checked out. I almost cried when the dr said 'you had better come up instead of me coming out as paeds is just around the corner if he needs to stay in'.
Alas, Ally was/is fine and they said the most likely reason is that I had a crack (no such crack visible!) on my nipple and when he sucked it bled. Has happened twice since so I'm definitely going to be asking the health visitor about it this week!
Anyway, moral of the story, apparently if your LO throws up blood straight after breastfeeding - it's normal
