ok so some of you know how i was craving ribena, i ordered it online and also saw acouple of drinks i loved and cant get here in the us so i bought afew one of them being Schwepps Bitter Lemon but it says it contains Quinine. For some of us from abroad know that this was for treating water for malaria. so i dint really pay much attention i was busy drinking and being merry when i finally noticed it on the bottle and i googled it. well .... not very much info. just wondering if any one have any information ?. I called my Doctor but they havent called me back yet.

I have never heard of it so I looked it up on Yahoo. This is what I found on New World Encyclopedia.

Quinine and pregnancy
In very large doses, quinine also acts as an abortifacient (a substance that induces abortion). In the United States, quinine is classed as a Category X teratogen by the Food and Drug Administration, meaning that it can cause birth defects (especially deafness) if taken by a woman during pregnancy. In the United Kingdom, the recommendation is that pregnancy is not a contra-indication to quinine therapy for falciparum malaria (which directly contradicts the US recommendation), although it should be used with caution; the reason for this is that the risks to the pregnancy are small and theoretical, as opposed to the very real risk of death from falciparum malaria. Further research, conducted in Sweden's Consug University hospital, has found a weak but significant correlation between dosage increase in pregnancy and Klebs-Loeffler bacillus infections in neonates.

I'm sure there are only tiny amounts in bitter lemon or we'd be told not to drink it.

Thanks ladies i guess i just need not worry so much.

i'm sure it's fine. We drink loads of it in this part of the world and all our babies are fine. i'm sure that the drink has very small quantities.xx

I'm sure you'd be fine. If it were anything to worry about I'm sure they would have put a warning on the food/ drink bottle label.
