I'm so frustrated with this situation, my little one has the habit of scratching her face constantly especially during feedings. She scratches so hard there are red marks all on her cheeks, and on her eyes ( you would think I abuse the poor baby!) I feel like I don't know what else to do. Cut her nails down but she does it really hard, she hates having socks or mitts on her hands even when I try to cover her hands with a blanket she cries and struggles to get her arms free so I swaddle her with her hands out. I don't know what else to do! I want her to be comfortable but I can't take the cries after she scratches herself.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

DS was the same way during those first months...hated being swaddled or wearing mittens and scratched himself all the time. The only thing I could really do was try to cut his nails every couple days. Hope you find a good solution! xx

Evy scratched herself for a bit (during a phase when she was about 3 months old) and hated the mits, but me being me I put them on her anyway. She got use to them after a couple of days. Other then that I give her nails a clip every other day. <3 Goodluck!

I'm not a fan of scratch mitts. For babies getting used to the world, it seems like sensory deprivation to me. It's a phase that doesn't last too long as they start to get more used to where their hands are. I'd just carry on keeping nails short, and be there for cuddles. Holding her hands while she feeds might help too.

We had the same problem and still do! We have to cut LO's nails every other day but then we file them too. Seems to do the trick. Wish I had time for a manicure a few times a week :haha:

Good luck hun, hope you can sort something out.

Yep , It didn't last long at all, not sure what all that was about, so she went right back to no mitts once she stopped scratching. (it was maybe a few days - a week max.)

Have you tried the babygros that have integrated scratch mitts? She might hate those too, but they worked great for us.

Unfortunately there isn't really anything you can do other than keep trimming LO's nails. Lily does the same thing. She has a scratch on her cheek right now actually, and that's not the first one. Try not to worry though it's pretty normal

My LO was exactly the same, it was so frustrating! There would be times where his forehead would be scratched to bits, it was awful! I hate scratch mits but often found I had to put them on him as he would literally scratch his face away. Even at 7 & a half months he's still prone to scratch away at his face although not nearly as bad as it used to be. I found that when feeding my LO & he was scratching I would put my hand on his face instead so he would scratch my hand instead. I would just keep putting my hand wherever on his face he was scratching! Also, I used to try to get him to hold my finger to try & distract him. Also, as Piggywinkle has mentioned filing the nails after cutting can help. I would cut & file my LO nails every day, even now I do them every other day x

My LO was the same. We just kept on top of cutting his nails as he wouldn't stop it.

My LO does the exact same, yesterday I was feeding at a baby group completely distracted and when I looked down she'd gouged her forehead big time, bled lots poor little mite. I have found that if i stroke her head/forehead where she would normally scratch she will just hold on my hand or sometimes scratch my hand instead. I pull over the integrated mitts if she has them and she still scratches but obviously the material is in the way so doesn't mark. Poor little things, I'm sure I read on the internet its a comfort thing but I don't quite get that as it stings like mad when she scratches, I know as she's done it enough to me!
