I had my first OBGYN appointment today and she did a pap test during it, which hurt really bad and actually made me start bleeding. She said something about me having a sensitive cervix, but I felt too in pain and sick to ask for more information. Can anyone explain what this means and how it could affect my pregnancy? Should I be worried?

Are paps normally uncomfortable for you? For me they always are- more than just a little uncomfortable, and it certainly wasn't a picnic when I had my IUI - lol. But all worth the greater good ;)

When I had my pap at my first OB appt for baby, it was about the same for me... if it's not "common" for you, she could just mean that your a bit more sensitive down there right now. You have more blood and fluids moving around and all those hormones can cause a bit more irritation...

I was told by my OB it's fairly common to have some spotting after as well... she didn't see any during my exam, but wanted me to be aware in case.

If you have concerns, I would call back for further explanation hun. :hugs:

I just wanted to mention also that I'm not worried about the bleeding caused by the pap test today. The doctor said it would stop within 24 hours and it actually stopped within 3 hours. I just wanted to know what to expect/be cautious of in the future. A friend told me that it means I will have the baby early?? I don't know what to think.

Haven't heard of a 'sensitive cervix' before as a actual condition but when I went for my last smear test I bled quite a bit for the day or so after and had to take painkillers cos it ached so much and could actually feel how sore my cervix was if I sat in certain positions. Never had a problem before so maybe it was just that particular nurse's technique. Could have been the same for you. When you are PG you are more likely to bled anyway so unless they were worried I'd say you've got nothing to worry about.

If it is playing on your mind could you give them a call and ask them to explain again over the phone?

Normally they are uncomfortable but they've never been painful lol. It was just unexpected when it happened.

Thanks. I actually have another appointment tomorrow for more lab work so I'll just ask when I go in for that. :)
