Does anyone have recommendations for sensory toys for an almost 6 year old? My DS struggles with meltdowns and anger, he has a space in school to go to that helps so I've ordered him a pop-up tent, a couple of Minecraft cushions and earmuffs for at home. I know it's different for each child but what sensory type things help your kids calm down? Thanks!

Well... it's tough to know without more information. What sensory system is affected? Is your child sensory seeking or sensory avoiding? Some kids, for example need deep pressure while others seek light touch. Some like spinning and flashing lights while others like a dark room. What are some sensory seeking or avoiding behaviors that your child does on his own? What toys or activities does he enjoy? What does he do when he's worked up and in need of calming down?

I'm still finding out what helps him and what doesn't which is why I was just asking for general ideas of things that have helped others so I can try some new things out with him.

Ours loves lycra or otherwise very hugging clothing ie couple size smaller than him, from toy shops bouncy balls, gooey slime, sand, stretchy toys, play doh things involving water, Lego, tangle toy, I know you said chewy not appropriate but ours benefits from a chew toy, tuff trays are good for at home, other ideas... fibre optic light? Ours finds smells beneficial. A relaxing candle unlit he will love to smell also we spray our sprays on him before school on his jumper so it's comforting for him when he's there and stressed (recommended by ot that he took stuff to school that comforted him and smelt of us.) He takes his chew toy and sometimes other bit and bobs. Exercise ball. Ours gets over and under sensory issues so sometimes he needs loads of go go go stuff to release it all and sometimes he needs the softy softy overstimulated stuff. OTherapist told us to try a weighted blanket for him. He finds a mildly warm hot water bottle soothing. The pressure of tight cuddles relaxes ours. Chewy foods. Sweet foods. Bland carbs. Crunchy carrots. Crackers. Citrus foods. Colouring book. Loads and loads more I can think of but there's a few.
