Severe morphology

Anyone with partners with severe morphology?

My OH's sperm analysis showed 1% normal sperm, massive shock, thought the reason we weren't conceiving was my fault

Are you doing anything to improve it?

Is there any chance at all of conceiving naturally?

I heard that Co Enzyme Q10 200mg dose is ment to be good, you can get it in Holland & Barrett, its in a red container - your DH should take 1 200mg tablet a day.

My husband had a sa done about a month ago and his count was high but morphology was 2% (based on Kruger's strict scale). He is taking FertilAid and Zinc. In addition, he was taking LOTS of hot baths for the past year, so he is no longer doing that. He was also playing a lot of basketball and wearing tight compression shorts, so he's not doing that either. I really think those 2 factors effected him a lot. I would definitely have your dh change anything that he may be doing that is effecting his sperm. We have an appt with a specialist on Monday and I'm hoping we can do a second sa in a few weeks to see if there's any improvement.

Oh and I've read tons of success stories of women getting pregnant with poor sa results so stay positive! It WILL happen!

Thanks so much future mama! He does wear jeans for work and only used to have 1 hot bath a week after football the rest of the time he has showers so now he's using only showers. I have him taking like 7 vitamins a day along with a banana and a glass of milk aswell as tomatoes In any form (tinned, sauces etc) high in lypocene. He's cut down smoking dramatically too and isn't going to drink. So hope it works because there is literally nothing else we can do. Hope you get the answers you want next time! Good luck xxx

My DH only has 1% morphology, too, but yes it can happen - we've gotten pregnant twice on our own. Unfortunately we lost both to miscarriage, but our RE says the miscarriages are not related to the morphology - he told us that the abnormally shaped sperm are not capable of fertilizing an egg. My DH has a sky-high count, though, and the RE thinks that's compensating for the low morphology - 1% of 320 million is still an awful lot of good sperm....

DH was already taking a daily multivitamin, and the RE recommended he add 500mg of L-carnitine daily. He started that in January of this year, though, and we've seen no change in his SA since then. From what I gather, nothing can change morphology... there are several things that can cause low count and low motility, but if he makes abnormally-shaped sperm, that's just what he makes for some reason, and nothing can change it.

Has your OH repeated the SA? They can vary pretty drastically from one sample to the next, even if he makes no changes in his diet/lifestyle. My DH has had 4 at this point - 2 showed 1%, 1 showed 2%, and 1 showed 4%, all with no changes in his diet or lifestyle.

Thanks very much for your reply. My OH has 31.2 I think it said, does that mean he has 31.2 million? I'm clueless with the numbers :/ we have been referred to the fertility specialist but again have no idea what happens next.

The strange thing is, his doctor and the lab passed his test as normal!! I was in total shock and took the results to MY doctor who referred us, even then my doctor wasn't overly concerned. He has decent motility too at 52%

This was a massive blow though, I was convinced it was due to me having LLETZ on my cervix and having dodgy CM. OH has a son conceived 9 years ago when he was 17. I have a 6 year old. It's just frustrating, there's got to be a reason behind it being SO bad.

He did have a bad life style though drinking etc and has made some dramatic changes, Just hope it reflects in his test or there is nothing we can do, aren't eligible to have IVF and would never be able to afford it ourself

Morphology is apparently affected massively by lifestyle, smoking, stress, diet,over heating in that area. Iv done so much research and found some mens morphology to go from 0% to 14% in 8 weeks just by detox and vitmains alone.

have you had a hsg yet? I had a lletz which caused scar tissue and caused a narrowing to my womb. i had to have it open. last cycle for the first time i got proper ewcm.

It was only discovered because they could get a catheter through for a hsg.

I think his sperm count is probably 31.2 million/ml. Since the sample had 2.9 ml, his total sperm count would be 90.48 million (which is very good). Hope that makes sense.

Mrs Evans I am convinced something isn't right, last month was my first "proper" period, heavy etc and sorry this is TMI but I used to have bad clots before the procedure and up until last month I didnt have any so I was convinced they weren't coming out due to narrowing or something!! Was in a lot of pain aswell!! The HSG has been on my mind a lot with scar tissue cos I've read about that too, maybe they'll send me for one when I go to see the FS! When did you have it done?

My husband and I have been TTC for 14 months now. He has had 2 SA done and the first one came back with a really high count, great motility but his morphology was low at 7%. The second test was 15% morphology and the rest the same. The family doc thinks the poor morphology is because of his job. He is an engineer in a big steel making plant and does a lot of hand on work in the plant and it is a very hot environment. We have been referred to a FS and our appoinment is in a week and a half. I am praying for some easy solutions to our TTC problem.

When did you have the LLETZ? Ah I bet thats whats up, sometimes it hurts to even sit down when AF comes, it's still heavy though, were you bleeding normally before the op in July? The pain I get isn't like period pain, its more like a sharp, strong pain, like an electric shock over and over again lol! Doesnt seem as bad lately though since I cut down on caffeine, weird xx

Well his family doctor thinks the primary problem with the morphology is his work environment because it is extremely extremely hot. Heat is a primary source of poor morphology. So the second SA was done after a few days off of work. They think the improvement was due to to the less exposure to heat. Only problem is that it is still in the abnormal range

Strange as OH job doesn't involve heat and he doesn't have hot baths or anything. Plays a lot of football and wears jeans a lot hmm interesting though. Thanks llampie. Definitely something to keep in mind xx

I've been researxhing this topic a lot over the past years and there is nothing that one can say definately helps! I notice that DH's morphology is awlays gigher after a hoiday so i vote stress could play a role! Try to increase count and motility and quality to compensate ! Enviromental toxins are not good so we started lots of antioxidants, 1000 vit E, 1000 vit C pycogenol, grapeseed extract, vit d, cq10, lycopene, acai berry! This coctail got our count to 46mil/ml, 75% motility and after hols morphology gors up to 5%.. Total volume 6ml. thats up from 18mil/ml, 34% motile and 2% morphology!
Also check his semen for infections... Chlamydia, ureaplasma, mycroplasma.., you can only do this privately though... Treatment is antibiotics and in a number of studies it has a great effect on man with previous infection! Also check prostate and varicocelle(sp) high temperature in the scrotum due to varicocelle can cause them to morph....
Just a thought....

Thanks so much brunbar, very interesting and helpful! Bit wary cos he was having pain in that area a while back. He had an ultra sound, would a variocele be picked up from an ultra sound and examination? Xx
