I had my 18 week ultrasound yesterday, and along with all of the routine measurements, they also measured my cervix. My Doctor told me it measured 2.8 cm/28mm. I know this is shorter than it SHOULD be, but she didn't seem too concerned? She said they like it to be 3 cm or longer usually. I have another appointment to check it again in 2 weeks. She also said the technician might have measured it incorrectly because she was new. :dohh:

I have a history of preterm labor (29 weeks and 35 weeks) and had bi-weekly cervical scans last time around (they were all transvaginal though) and my cervix did not shorten.

Can anyone shed any light on me?

Hey Hun, did they measure your cervix abdominally or with tvu? 2.8 is on the shorter side of normal, but it can't be deemed accurate if it was done abdominally regardless of the sonograher xx

if it was done on the outside then it usually easures lower than it really is, you really need a transvaginal scan. I'm 17 weeks tomorrow and mine measures 2.9

Hi - all that can sometimes clearly be seen with an abdo scan is if you are funnelled or not (cervix open or closed at the top). It is difficult to determine length with any accuracy unless doing a tvu. Personally I'd be asking for a tvu and second opinion Hun xx

She didn't say anything about funneling, etc. she just said it measured short. When I had the transvag ultrasounds during my previous pregnancy my cervix was VERY obvious, and even I could make it out clearly, but during the abdo ultrasound, I could barely see what was on the screen...

Guess I'll just have to wait it out until my next scan on the 30th. I think they're going to try an abdo ultrasound again though so I might have to push for a transvag.

Cervical length should definitely be measured transvaginally.

Just had mine checked at 14 weeks 4 days and it was 38mm.

Due to a LEEP a few years ago my doctor wanted to check it between 14-16 weeks as apparently if a cerclage is needed they like to put it in around 16 weeks.

Insist on a transvaginal for your own peace-of-mind.

I had my second scan today and my cervix was measuring 3.6 cm.
