Hi

Can you help? Ive got contents insurance for the first time. Had it about 2 months now. My Oh was at work and his mac laptop got thrown off a shefl when the shelf collapsed. work is refusing to pay for it. Will it be better for us to claim or pay the £999 for a replacement and not claim?

We pay £17 a month at teh moment, what would you expect it to jump to if we did claim?

Hi,
with most contents insurance you will need personal possessions cover for a lap top so check if you have that and also what your excess is.
We made a claim a few year ago on buildings and contents for fire damage for about £4000 and our insurance only went up a few pounds each month.
But don't phone your insurance company unless your sure you will claim as if you notify them but don't claim it stays on your insurance history as a loss and they will still increase your insurance.
.xxx.

Oh thanks for that.i didnt realise that at all!
Our insurance does cover accidential damage outside the house.

We had a huge claim (thousands of pounds) on our contents a couple of years ago when our flat was burgled, and when we got the renewal quote from the same insurer we'd claimed from it was astronomical. We tried a few other companies and they quoted much the same as if we hadn't been burgled.

You could try putting the details into a comparison website with and without the claim details and see what it says.

It won't affect your payment loads if it does, just a few pounds probably. Certainly it'd be cheaper overall than buying a new laptop I should think. What's your excess?

Excess is £200 or 250. cant remember off teh top of my head. think its 250 though.

Lets get on with the comparison websites then lol. Thats not a bad idea. Thanks!

Who are you insured with hun if you don't mind me asking?

I work for AXA Insurance in the commercial property dept and i deal with claims just like these so if you need any help send me a PM :)

It may be worth claiming on your insurance and as the others have said your premium shouldn't go up to much. Do you have the original purchase receipt for the laptop by any chance? If you don't then some insurers will pay what the laptop is worth now and not what it was worth when you originally bought it so this is something to think about also is the laptop repairable or is it irrepairable as your insurance might want to try and repair it before they pay out for a new one.

Let me know how you get on

xxx
