Should I get a second opinion?

Hi everyone

Merry Christmas everyone. My husband (35 years old) and myself (40 yrs old) have been TTC for almost 1.5 years. This would be our first baby for both of us. I wanted to run some of my lab numbers by you for two different tests in April and December 2010. I can't understand the big difference, especially in my FSH and Estradiol numbers. We went to Boca Fertility in South Florida. Here are the numbers;

April 2010 (taken day 3 of cycle):

FSH - 3.1
LH - 3.9
TSH 3rd Generation - 0.31
Prolactin - 14
Estradiol - 398 - way abnormal and out of range??

November 2010 (Day 19-20 of the cycle):

Progesterone: 1.1

December 2010 (Day 3 of next cycle):

TSH 3rd Generation - 0.51
FSH - 21.4 (extremely high??)
LH - 6.8
Estradiol - 19
Anti Mullerian Hormone - 0.2

I had a HSG performed on 12/16/10 and everything was normal. In early December, I had my first vaginal ultrasound done and the doctor said it looked normal and the uterus lining looked thick which indicated that I had ovulated recently. My cycles are irregular (ranging from 25 - 30 days). Basically he said my only alternative due to the high FSH number was a donor egg IVF or regular IVF. Should we seek a second opinion? Aren't we a candidate for the Clomid challenge? Why would in 8 months my FSH number jump to a number of a woman in menopause? Why would my estrogen number go from something off the charts to a normal number in 8 months? Both lab results were done from Quest Diagnostics. Is a lab error possible? I am still getting my period and am only 40, and have to think I have usable eggs left in me. Help ladies, what do you think? Thanks for the support in this trying time and I look forward to your responses.

Were the labs run at a Fertility clinic or Primary doctors? I had my FSH levels ran twice also in about 1 1/2 yrs... the first was 6.8 and the second was 14. I was told that was high and referred to a FS (per my request)... but the FS told us that unless the lab is set up specifically for Fertility Testing, that it can vary quit a bit from lab to lab or even test to test... even with the same blood draw. Due to this, even though she said that was of "concern" she is having more labs run for me next cycle... to verify what is actually going on.

I would highly recommend at least speaking to a Fertility Specialist in your area- your doc should be able to refer you to on as mine did. Then you can understand all your options and what is truly going on with you.

FSH is just one, of many, factors to consider. If all my tests come back OK- I'll be put on Clomid with IUI next cycle and hoping that helps speed things along as we've been TTC for a while now...

Best of luck hun!

Hi seoj

Thanks for the quick response. The first of labs back in April were ordered by my gyno. The last round of labs this past month were ordered and run by a fertility specialist. I am just wondering if seeing another fertility specialist is necessary, which I think it is. The numbers seem so different, especially the estrogen and FSH readings.

I certainly don't think it would hurt to have them run again... maybe 3 consecutive months this time around? To see what your "average" would be? (but hopefully you won't have to get that far)...

At this point- the more information the better! Best of luck hun!
