Should I go private?

Hi

We have been TTC since Jun08 and have not been successful as in that time I have only had 2 cycles currently on approx CD120 of 3rd cycle due to PCOS.

I have been referred to Consultant Gynaecologist at local hospital who prescribed Metformin. Unfortunately I took this for 2 weeks and it made me really ill so had to stop taking it. I am due to go back for a Hycosy test next week and I am wondering depending on what happens if I should think about private treatment?

Do you think I am likely to be prescribed Clomid and then if that doesn't work go on IVF waiting list?

I know I haven't been trying that long but I really want to get pregnant this year and I am willing to look at private options if I need to.

What do you ladies think?

Sorry to hear your not geting anywhere. Tough isnt it.

We were advised by my private consultant as a couple with proven fertility issues (such as yourself) we had to do the natural thing for 6 months and seek advice from a fertility clinic. Normal Healthy couples usually do this after twelve.

I would see your GP and get referred ASAP. Some waiting lists are stupidly long. There is a special criteria that our local hospital has. to see if you qualify for their help. If you want to know me private message me and I will let you know. I think you should at least investigate this before going private. Thats what we intend to do.

Take care

With the NHS they will want you to have been trying for at least a year before they will think about prescribing anything like Clomid as they will say you have not given yourself enough of a chance. It's only been 8 months thusfar so you are still a way away from the 12 month guideline. Then they might start investigating.

I know it's tough and that you want to get pregnant this year but is it worth spending the money when in four months you will get it all for free, most likely?

Thanks Guys!

Do you not think they will prescribe Clomid until beginning of June then (when it has been a year?) I assumed they might prescribe it at next appointment as I wasn't able to take the Metformin?

Will have to see how it goes!

Have spoken to OH and we have decided to see where we get to within NHS in 09 and then maybe move onto private in 10 - hope we don't get that far though!

Clomid is a fertility drug. NHS will not provide that until you have been trying for twelve months. They might prescribe it but I very much doubt it, to be honest. It depends on your PCT, though. In my experience, and my experience in having many people online who have the same problems, most will not do anything at all, not even testing, until the twelve month mark. They also shouldnt prescribe Clomid until you have had HSG or Lap and Dye to make sure your tubes are actually open.

There is, in all honesty, no point wasting the money when it hasn't even been nine months of trying, yet and in a few months time, even, you will get it for free.

You do need to give yourself a chance naturally, though, before you start moving onto invasive drugs or procedures. Like I told another person on here, my friend had the severest type of PCOS and conceived naturally without even trying. she only had three or four periods per year. I, myself, only have around five or six ovulatory cycles and it took ages before I was prescribed Clomid, which was shite anyway.

Kat08 - I'd wait and see what the doc says. All cases are different, they may have different criteria when it comes to someone who clearly has very messed up cycles (120 days must drive you barmy!). It would clearly be pointless to tell you to go away and try for a year with cycles like that. Good luck with your appt.

Yeah that's what I thought Jan34 the consultant has been really good about getting the tests organised because I haven't had a period since end of October last year! Just hope they can do something else because the Metformin was awful!
