harry is 18 lbs and 18 weeks. He has doubled his birth weight. He still goes 4 hours between formula feeds but has started to wake at 3am. He will take a bottle if i give it to him but he will also just go back to sleep if i lay him next to me then put him back in cot.

Dont know if i should start weaning. HV was very adament that i didnt til he was at least 20 weeks??

Doesnt sound like he needs it yet. Its when they start wanting to feed more and arnt gaining weight etc etc :) but then again its also when mummy feels its right, as mum's know best XxxX

i agree with ema! see how he goes, and see how you feel too honey, you're his mum. you no best x

Since he has started waking again, id say yes... This is one of the signs. I started weaning at about 13 or 14 weks.

i started weaning at about 3 months with DD and DS.
i wouldnt bother asking the HV as they will just go with what the text book says.
all babies are different and some need solids earlier. if you want to try weaining the try a small amount of very runny baby rice on a spoon.

which formula milk is he on? the 1st one or hungry baby. if it the 1st one then i would try the hungry baby one before trying weaning

You should wait for a bit IMO, if for no other reason then to make sure that there's no other reason for his waking - ie teething, growth spurt etc.

I say try a small amount of runny baby rice and see if it helps , theres no harm in trying right :)

i would say yes cause hes waking i the night again! but only mummy knows best!!1

good luck hun xxxx

You could always give it a try. A few days ago I tried cereal and veggies on David for the first time and he couldn't stand them, so I'm giving it another few weeks before I try again. I think your baby will let you know if he's not ready!

Waking once in the night is not too bad, I agree with Ema - I would probably try and wait till the 20 weeks. The HV will just say 6 months, but some babies do seem to be weaned a bit earlier - although I personally didn't want to wean Tristan too early and he is also a big baby and eats a lot (I waited until 23 weeks - so around 5 and a half months). I think Ist Baby's suggestion is good about the baby rice - you could try that.

he is on cow and gate 1. i suppose i could try the next one for hungrier babies. Do you know if there are any problems associated with changing formula?

I would wait, it might just be another growth spurt and that's why he's waking. If he's still satisfied during the day I wouldn't wean this early...there are reasons they say to wait and if the only sign is waking at night I would def hold off for awhile

Oh and sometimes changing formula can upset their tummy a bit, some babies have no problems with it though

I would wait just a little longer.

annabelle is 16 weeks and she woke through the night but now she is going back through the night again, i would say if he is going 4 hours between feeds in day its not time yet but if you feel he is then its your descision hunni.

I think maybe try and get more milk down him in the day.. but if that doesnt work then some pureed veg wont go a miss!!

Waking in the night is one of the prime signs, and this is what I looked out for!

hes 18lb and thats what courtney is now at 7 months and shes been on solids for 2 months!!

I agree hun other signs they are ready are sitting up, loss of tongue thrust action, shorter times between feeds, frequent night waking but i'm doing baby led weaning so not sure if they all apply. I know they recommend around 6 months as babys digestive system isn't mature enough til then.
