Should poo really do this???

I know if a baby sits in poo for ages it can cause bad rashes but when my LO poos it can take only a matter of minutes for patches of her bum to literally ooze and bleed. She is then in a lot of pain while I clean her and her nightly bath can make her cry even though I try to make sure it isn't too hot.

Is this related to her having eczema?

I don't know much about this, but are you using a diaper rash cream? They form a barrier that can protect their butt from the poo... might help?

That doesn't sound right, a trip to the doctors is on order. Take photos of what it looks like as her bott will probably be smooth and peachy when there no doubt! My friends son has eczema and I can't say she's ever mentioned that used to happen.

Sudocream does wonders but if this is not helping either as your doctor or health visitor, HV can prescribe oinments, also the pharmacy can prescribe for rashes if you want to try something before you get an appointment. x

I think sometimes thrush can cause it to be very sore there too.

is she teething? my son was the same and it was usually caused by teething. Also did she ever have reflux? an acid tummy can cause it.

I would suggest Sudocream and instead of baby wipes, use cotton wool and cooled down Rooiboss/Red Bush tea...it has healing properties. For a really bad rash, its suggested to leave the tea bag in the nappy on the area effected. It works wonders. My son had a bad rash, and it was cleared in a day and we have stuck to this routine since and had absolutely no issues.

Good Luck!

Is this with teething? Teething can make the gut juices more acidic and make nasty poops-quite foul smelling.

OR, maybe LO's skin is extra sensitive because of the eczema?

I would try a barrier cream and see what happens. If it doesnt help then a trip to the doctor.

My LO has eczema and she has never had a rash as bad as the one you have described.
I would def get her booked into the doc's and Id take a pic too like tina3747 said. Rash's always clear up once you get into see the doc lol.

Also if Paiges bum did ever get red or sore when she was younger, I would remove her nappy and let her play on a towel on top of her play mat. plenty of air and a chance to dry off works wonders.

Hope you manage to get things sorted. xx

She doesn't appear to be teething - no excessive drool, no bumps on her gums - which is why I'm concerned.

Sudocrem, Bepanthem etc. don't really help once it has happened and I don't use them as a barrier creme because I'm using cloth nappies and petroleum based creams damage them. However I have a beeswax ointment that I might just apply at every nappy change to see if it can protect her a bit.

She doesn't get nappy rash as in red spotty areas, just these raw patches that look so painful. I do use nappy free time to aid healing though, thanks.

Is it just happening at the moment, or has it always happened? Because it could be thrush if it's just happening at the moment. Madeline had thrush once, and her little bum was so sore.

Just for info - through trial and error I have found the best cream for nappy rash by far is Metanium. It's yellow and thick, so doesn't look very nice, but you only need the tiniest smidgen of it (it tells you to spread it very thinly, so you can see the texture of the skin through the cream). It's only a couple of quid a tube, and it has cleared up some horrible bouts of nappy rash (from antibiotics :-() super quick. My midwife friend recommended it to me. x

have you tried grovia magic stick? Its cloth-diaper safe, heard its great.

If its thrush, you're going to have to strip the diapers :(

My LO had exactly this, when he had a sensitivity to acidic foods-thankfully it was short lived but for a while I had to forego all citrus fruits and pineapple and minimise my intake of tomatoes, peaches, and other slightly sour fruits and veg xx

It has happened a few times over a few months but I'm sure that sometimes poos have happened in the car etc and I've not known till taking her out and her bum's been fine, other times I've got to it quick and it has still caused these raw bits.

It could be her food at the moment (although it happened when exclusively breastfed too, and I thought oh here we go teething, but it never was) as she has had Mango and tomatoes over the past few days.

I'll ask the doc re thrush too (are there any other symptoms?).

Thrush on their little bum bums tends to be just persistent nappy rash that doesn't clear - and the patches are quite angry, bright red looking. If it's not clearing up in a couple of days, then there's a good chance it could be thrush (yeast infection).

Check LOs mouth too - Madeline had oral thrush at the same time. They have white patches on their tongues/lips/gums that look like milk coating, but don't come away easily if you rub them. Madeline had oral thrush first, and this spread to her bum through her digestive system. It cleared up pretty quickly though.

Also - don't know if this has been mentioned, but don't use wipes while it's sore as they dry the skin out. Dig out the cotton wool :)

i know of alot of babies with horrible nappy rash and they also use cloth nappies and don't want to use the creams, but sudocream really is magic, for the sake of your bubba just use it for a couple of days and use the disposables. We use band aid's when we have a sore, use disposables when your daughter does.

What about food allergies? Does she get a rash anywhere else? Like on her face, neck, back & chest?

I used to use disposables but this still happened to her bum! I also have tried sudocrem despite her being in cloth and it hasn't helped (and bepanthem).

Re thrush symptoms, this isn't persistent and starts to heal straight away as long as she gets lots of air on her bum. She has also never had oral thrush (I kept an eagle eye out for it because she spent such a long time being rubbish at latching).

Oh I forgot to say that I don't use wipes unless away from home (vacation etc.)

Summer rain: did you self diagnose the acidic food thing or is it something health professionals are aware of?
