Should we bring back the death penalty?

yes, i think hes insane like the guy who killed all those kids on that island in scandanavia

I don't think it's used enough. I would love to see it used for repeat criminals. If you've been convicted 3 times for the same crime (or progressively worse ones) you're likely not going to stop and shouldn't be continually put back into society (and have more children to repeat the cycle). Keeping someone in prison is very expensive for tax payers. If they start culling the bad ones there will be less of them AND knowing that you are going to DIE if you keep getting in trouble may actually cause some of them to reform themselves vs. the commit a crime get put on probation, repeat, get probation again, repeat, probation again. They REALLY need to have severe consequences to keep people from continually committing crimes.

but capital punishment doesn't work in the US. People still murder people and commit heinous crimes.

I do to. I'm genuinely suprised hes been trialed the way he is. In that courtroom he did not look right.

I don't like like the idea of the death penalty, but i wish we had something more severe in Canada. I know we have it here in Washington where I live but I spent 25 years of my life growing up in Winnipeg Manitoba which is apparently the murder capital of Canada. The thing that really aggravates me is that when someone get's life in prison it isn't life, they always seem to be out after a few years and it's sickening. Recently in Winnipeg there was a man named Shawn Lamb that has been caught and being charged with the murder of 3 young women, one of whom was 6 months pregnant. The thing that really gets me is this guy has had 99 prior convictions since 1976, many included acts of violence and sexual assault.... 99????? How the hell was this man allowed back on the streets? Boggles my fricken mine that some parole board would be like "Yeah I think this turkey here is going to follow the right path"... i'm sorry i just don't have that kind of faith in people....

I really wish prison was more of a penalty. Maybe they should make a hole like prison like the one in the recent Batman and have them live in that dingy pit with their food being slop poured down on them.

And end my rant :3

They don't use it enough and most people just get "probation" which basically means NOTHING, so they continue to commit the same crimes (while still on "probation") and only get "probation" again. I really think if there were true consequences and not just "probation" (or occasionally a jail sentence with full entertainment, meal, and AC) then people would be more likely to think before committing crimes (or at least we would get rid of most of them so they don't breed 6 more kids that grow up to be the same way).

i dont think prisoners should have a fun time but i dont think they should be locked in a cell with nothing. Did anyone watch the gordon ramsay thing? I think there needs to be more things like that. Get them working, training & paying back. Change their outlook on life. I am a believer in rehabilitation & it works (look at finland for an example).

yes I said something similar in my post earlier. I think they need to get prisoners doing something like what Ramsay did. Or anything that would be a benefit so tht tax payers money is worth something!

I definitely think life should mean life. Serious crimes should be dealt with my making them rot in prison.... They should be there til they are on there death bed in my opinion! Imagine someone who had murdered and been released after so many years lived near you? The thought is scary. They get their identities protected, that's not fair! Xxx

I agree, i think, whilst in prison, they should work to pay for being there personally.

No, we do not have the right to decide if someone lives or dies unless it's self defense - the thought of that much power makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. Although I'm for heavily regulated euthanasia which I guess some people would find weird.

Nope. I don't believe in an eye for an eye. Saying okay you killed this person/s now we're going to kill you.... ? I've never understood that logic.
I think jail should be that, i'll never understand why they're given tvs or any luxury's.

I think the US law from what I see from here seems a bit odd at times. A woman got either a 90k fine or 42 years in prison for changing her son's grades in the school pc. Where is the relation. Also some people seem to get sth like 226 years in prison. I havent seen anybody yet that lived that long so why not cut down?. As mentioned above I am also a believer in rehabilitation for most cases- we do have cases where people are locked up in a psychiatric ward after their prison term, but saying kill them is just barbaric.
In many of the more pettier crimes (or not so petty) one has to see the where do the people come from? if they come from a low income , low education background then you have to consider-- What can I do to support people that are on the low income low education range? How many crimes are committed because there is no other option to survive?. Also important, once the person is out of prison what support have they so they does not fall back into old schemes?

As much as I would wish certain people like the Ian Brady's of the world dead, in actual terms I don't think I agree with the death penalty.

It doesn't sit right with me, the fact that other people can decide if someone lives or dies.

I do think in Britain prisons need to be a lot tougher. Not inhumane or squalor etc, but tougher. I work in the criminal justice system and I see the same names cropping up day in day out. It's like a revolving door! Not for massively serious crime, things like burglary etc, but obviously prison is not enough of a deterrent for them.

So no I don't agree with it. However I do think life should mean life in more cases. Am I right in thinking there are only a handful of prisoners who are actually in prison until they die?

I think the death penalty makes 'us' no better than 'them'.

Has any one ever heard about Edward Earl Johnson? I watched a documentry on him when I was 13ish in RE. It will stay with me forever, and he (and others like him) are the reason why we should NEVER bring back the death penalty. Mistakes cant be altered and one would be far too many.

In this day in age its beggar's belief that we have old people go cold and hungry, soldiers who fought for there country homeless,And malnutrition yet killers get a bed,Food, heat, access to education and whatever luxurious they might be privileged to earn in jail,Im not saying id like the death penalty back but i do think that the punishment sometimes doesn't seem harsh enough when you think of the misery they inflict on the victims family and the kind of life they have available in jail. not to mention the drain on the tax payers purse strings keeping them,That being said i dont think id be in favour of the death penalties either.

No, I don't think it has a place in our criminal justice system and too many mistakes are made.

However I do think prisons should be more responsible for ensuring prisoners repay their debts to society, increased work, reduced costs on paying for "luxuries", and although education and rehabilitation programmes are good for secondary prevention I do think that these shouldn't be offered until prisoners have earned them.

Some prisoners I do wish we're literally left to rot with their despicable crimes, and sometimes lack of remorse...but unfortunately that goes against my core beliefs.

No. Far better they are put to good use, in hard labour camps with no luxuries for living. Death is the easy option. X

I do also think prisoners in general should pay towards what it cost the tax payer to keep them in prison- i think any assets should be sold, and any prisoners that are realised and do go on to employment, should have to pay it back from their wages. I think its unfair that WE have to pay for THEM. x

Absolutely. The only thing barbaric and disgusting is the actions these foul animals commit. They lose their human rights the second they act like a violent thug and attack another individual. I for one would sleep a lot better at night if I knew those arseholes were 6 foot under, whilst they're still alive, they're a threat and a waste of air and resources. Prisons are way too cushy.

I don't know how anyone could look at this picture and think the scumbags that did it should still be entitled to their lives. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2178626/Battered-face-pensioner-Joe-Carter-82-chased-burglars-beaten-home.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

As for the argument "makes us no better than them", I fully disagree with this. I for one would never inflict any sort of injuries on someone which they do. Them on the death penalty is nothing like the cold blooded murder/violence which they commit. The difference is, they deserve it, and death would be delivered in a much 'nicer' way than what they did to their poor victims.

Alternatively, prison would suffice if they were chucked in a tiny cell with no windows, no bed, no toilet and a slice of dry bed everyday for the rest of their lives. Even their misery would not compare with those of the poor families left behind after these tragedies.

So for those of you that agree with the death penalty- what about those that, I dont know, have got into a drunken fight, and one punch has killed that person, or a woman thats been battered for years and years and cant take any more? They've still taken a life? Or just for brutal, one off attacks with no motive? Or only mass murderers or serial killers? Where do you draw the line?

Thats my point too - Wheres the line.

An eye for an eye - And the whole world will go blind. I believe that's the saying?
