What are the signs that you are weaning your baby too early?

Spitting food out? Weird nappies?

Just wondering what you would look for

Thanx

If the baby can't sit up well and get food to their mouths, it's probably too soon. I'd always rather err on the side of caution anyway. Next time round I think I'll wait until about 7 months.

I was told I was on the edge of weaning at 4 1/2 months old so we did it slowly (ish) but when I gave her her first green bean and watched her bring it straight to her mouth that was enough to tell me that we were right to do it. She was lovin' it.

Do what you think is best but do wait till 4 months at least.

Thanks for the replys, I know all the weaning cues but I was wondering more if you decide to try weaning what signs would you be looking for that things aren't going as well as they should be.

Will they just not entertain the idea of something in their mouth, be sick or will their nappies change dramatically?

Thanx

No, you can feed really tiny babies before they are ready and there won't be signs that show until later.

You're better looking for definite signs that they *are* ready. Babies can all vary in how they will react to solids, but you won't necessarily get a definite "I'm not ready" cue from them.

My daughter was weaned at 16 weeks and seems to have taken to it fine.. apart from horiffic nappies she has been great!

My LO was showing signds of being ready when she was 4m, so I offered her some baby rice and porridge, but she kept spitting it out. I couldn't get her to keep anything in there, so I stopped. I started again this month, on advice of a dietician (becuse LO is slipping down in centiles), and she's done a 180. She was a bit uncertain at first, but within a couple of meals she was happy to take it, and actually reaches out for the spoon. We began weaning (2 meals a day) on Sunday, and today she fed hardly making a mess on her bib at all. I was shocked, but so happy

I can't list any signs that your LO isn't ready, but I would just say take it slow and follow their cues. If they're not happy taking food in their mouth, then perhaps try in a month or so. Even at 6m, it should be a happy and relaxed experience, so treat it like that.

The most obvious sign of not being ready is a strong tongue-thrust. Before weaning age, when something touches their mouth the tongue pokes out, generally pushing whatever it is out.

We weaned at wk 20 due to reflux. We stopped after few weeks as he was dropping milk feeds & he was spitting or gagging & throwing up whenever we offer him new tastes. We were only offering him 1 solid but it really affected his milk intake, this is why we decided he was not ready as his stomach couldnt take solids with his regular milk feeds at that age. At 6.5 mnths we started again & he was more ready as there was a balance between his formula intake & solids.
