This might sound like a really stupid question but when I made Edwards bottles before I triple checked that the water was the right amount, but then when I moved them into the fridge they seemed to have almost an ounce more in them. Is that just the powder increasing the volume? xx

i was quite confused by this aswell! id make up a bottle and pass it to OH for him to feed LO and hed ask why i put 6oz instead of 5oz, i was adamant i put 5 in (which i did) but i thought i was going crazy lol!

In that case, when they drink it does it still count as 4ozs even if the formula makes it up to 5? xx

Yes hon,still counts as 4oz.
You go by the amount of water you've put in there  xxx

I find this so odd. To me, if the baby takes in 5oz of fluid, then that's still 5oz of fluid... The solution (or suspension or whatever it is, I forget!) is the sum of the parts, right? So the powder has a certain volume, then water has a certain volume, and together they make another volume of formula.

Not trying to say anyone is wrong, just that I find it weird. I get irritated having to do the long-winded thing of "We make 6oz bottles and she takes 6oz but she's not draining the bottles because they bulk out to 7oz with the powder so no we're not artificially holding her at a lower bottle amount"... Maybe others don't have to do that  I just get quizzed by the HVs though because LO is small

It annoys me that aptamil cartons only have 7oz in them, when my LO has 7ozs its 8oz!! (7oz water, the rest formula!)
