I was wondering if any one can help I had my 20 week scan today and they have said baby is smaller than average and they are re-scanning in a week and this will be with a consultant and many rescan every four weeks to ensure that growth is ok.

Has anyone experienced this ??? what does it mean if baby continues to grow small ?? does this mean an early birth or complications ???

please help im freaking out :flower:

Wish I could help -- I'm going through something similar... baby was fine at 20 weeks, but now at 30 and again at 35 has some measurements that are small. I have no idea what this means, looking forward to seeing the consultant so I can get my questions answered. Try to stay positive, I know it's hard. Good luck.

This is my 2nd pregnancy and once again im having a small baby.

With my son he measured small from 20 weeks. At 31 weeks he was 4lb but from then till 40+5 (when i had him) he only weighed 6lb2oz. He was very healthy though and just needed some help warming up.

This time bubs has measured small from 20 weeks so i had a growth scan at 32 weeks. She was only 3lb ( average is 4lb) Her stomach was only on the 3rd percentile and overall growth on the 5th. I was really worried as my ob said if things dont change he was taking her out at 34weeks. From then ive been having ctgs done twice a week and givin 2 shots of steroids just incase.

Today i had my follow up growth scan and bubs has grown :) She is still tiny, 3.9lb but moved from the 5th percentile to the to the 15th.
As long as bubs keeps growing and your placenta and the cord is doing their job then they will most likely just keep a good eye on you and bubs.

I know how stressful it is but the best you can do is eat well, rest plenty, get lots of water and try to relax. All drs are different how they like to treat mothers with small babies. They let my son stay in me, where as this dr i have this pregnancy was going to take her out early if one little thing changed.

thank you !!! I guess at 20 weeks its still early yet and things can change I guess they might do a few more scans before making any desicions about anything. Better get shopping and organised just in case !!!

Sorry, I have no experience I just wanted to say I hope your bubba gets a bit of a growth spurt very soon and hopefully it's all going to be fine.

Hello hun.

With my first child he measured small throughout but I am only 5ft 1 and he was small all over. I was led to believe that as long as everything was in proportion and he was still growing, albeit at a slow rate, it wasn't too much to worry about. I was warned he'd be about 4lbs - he ended up being nearly 9lb! And I still had a tiny bump. Mind you this was 14 years ago so technology wasn't as good as it was now.

As long as blood flow through the cord is okay, it shouldn't be too much to worry about. I've been worried about my current baby (my sixth) cos my bump seems tiny but the midwife it feels about right "for me".

Good luck, try and get as much rest as possible and eat lots of protein.xx

They have to rescan for the blood as they could see it going in ok just not coming out - will have this scan in 3 weeks so I hope that its ok - its all a bit worrying but hope that as they are monitoring me that they will be able to do whatever is best

And scans are meant to reassure us aren't they?! I get myself in to such a state before I have one that I sometimes wonder :/.

Good luck, hope all turns out well for you both.x

I've had to have lots of growth scans with Sofia and now with this pregnancy. As far as I'm aware, like someone said above, they mostly check that everything is in proportion. With Sofia I was having the scans as she had a congenital defect, she was very small but growing at a steady rate so they were happy.

Saying that, my friend got freaked out last year by her ob-gyn constantly telling her the baby was small and said baby was born at 8.5lbs so they're not always right anyway!

Neither DH or I are particularly big, and his mother is Mexican and tiny, so I figure I shouldn't really be having a huge baby anyway.

Good luck, hope everything works out and try not to worry too much :hugs:

Aidan measured small all through my pregnancy. i had several growth scans and he measured small on all of them. it doesn't mean early birth, they won't induce you if baby measures small. My boyfriends mum bought tons of small baby clothes. Guess how much he weighed?...7lb 13. just goes to show you!
