SMP OR MA Is one better than the other? Because am short 2hrs a week for qualifying for smp and not sure if i should do the extra hours or just get ma

Not sure really but you dont get taxed on MA.

You do on smp.

I think you will qualify for one or the other. You might not be able to make up the hours now if you are expecting. As mentioned above, MA works out at a few more pounds as there is no tax or NI.
It depends on how long you've been working for over a period of time.

Basically...

With SMP - You're paid the higher of £123.06 or 90% of your wages for 6 weeks then you're paid the lower of the two for 33 weeks.

With MA - You're paid the lower of £123.06 or 90% of your wages for for the entire 39 week period.

So, it only makes a difference for the first 6 weeks and only if 90% of your wages is higher than £123.06.

For me SMP is worth more because those 6 weeks at 90% get me about £1500 rather than the £450 ish a month i'd get on MA xx

Yep, that 90% can look like a big difference - but how much do you pay in Tax and NI over 9 months.

Well it'll be a lot less than I usually pay I imagine based on the fact the income will be a lot less. Not an awful lot I can do about it anyway, as if you qualify for SMP you don't get to choose which to take I don't think xx

Agree with Katy, you don't get to choose SMP or MA. As you are pregnant now, you will quailfy for one or the other depending on how long you have worked in your current job, whether you are classed as employed or self employed etc.

Sounds like you'll get SMP
