So Scared!

I cut and paste my previous c-section post here for a quick read.

I had my baby on April 10, 2012 by elective caesarean. All went well. I am healing nicely, my uterus is getting smaller every day. my incision looks good. More importantly, baby is beautiful and healthy. He eats and sleeps so well. I plan to post some of my incision photos a little later if anyone is interested.

Here is my experience with a caesarean. I arrived at the hospital at 9 am on Tuesday morning. The nurse began an IV on me to administer fluids and antibiotics (standard with surgery). The anesthesiologist came in and explained what would be happing during the spinal, the surgery, and after with respect to the anestesia. My husband and I waited until approximately 11 am. I walked to the operating room while my husband momentarily waited outside. I was given the spinal...which was not very uncomfortable at all. just a little bee sting in the back...that was it. In moments i could feel my legs getting heavy. I was given a catheter. I could not feel this at all. Then a big sheet was put up to block my view of the surgery. My arms were also restrained so i didn't grab my stomach out of reflex when the surgery began. My husband was brought into the operating room. My doctors began the surgery, checking to make sure i could not feel pain. i could not. i could just feel pressure. the doctor pulled baby out, quickly showed him to me, then took him to be cleaned up, weighed...all the standard newborn stuff. The doctor then began to sew me up. At this time the anesthesiologist administered some drugs to help with my anxiety. It was helpful as I was lying there, waiting to be sewn up, waiting to hear how baby was doing. I was then taken to the recovery area for about an hour--baby was there with me. (The whole surgery took about 30 minutes from first incision to last stitch.) after about an hour in the recovery area...I was taken up to my room with baby. My parents quickly came up to see me and baby. I held baby and nursed. All went well. That night I had the catheter removed (no pain). I was able to get up, walk around, go to the bathroom. The next morning my IV was removed. I was given oral pain pills. I was easily walking around by the second day. Even up tidying my room. I went home on Friday morning. Staples were removed prior to my discharge. (I had staples rather than stitches for my stomach. I have some bandage strips over part of the incision (i took some off already). i am no longer on any pain meds and feel fine. i am very active.

SEVEN months later. My incision has healed just fine. Tummy back to normal. only scar remains. my scar is a little hypertrophic/keloid. But it feels fine and looks like a normal scar (just a little raised). I will post some updated scar photos later in a different thread.

Good luck.

Thank you so much for all the support and kind words- my section is less than 48 hours away and while I'm still nervous, the nurse has put most of my fears at ease. We went to get my lab work done yesterday and she answered all the questions we had- everything from "Will I be numb when the catheter comes out?" to "When will I be able to hold my son?" (12 hours and skin to skin while I'm being stitched up, btw!). I'll be discharged Thursday at 11 AM as long as there are no problems. I'm just not fond of the idea of being cut open- but I'm going to just have to be a soldier for my lil' man and buck up...its this way or no way- and I want to have a healthy and safe birth...even if it means I get a new scar.

All the best! Don't worry, you'll be fine. :flow: You know your little man is worth it. :hugs:

good luck hun!its honestly not that bad and it is soooo worth it!u totally forget about yourself and what u have been through...youll fall in love with damani (sp???sorry!) and forget u were ever worried!xxx good luck and thinking of you!

A friend of mine had the EXACT same problem as you (Thrombocytopenia). Her problem was extremely severe. She knew she had it before she got pregnant, but wanted to have a baby so badly, she did it anyway, and just banked blood ahead of time knowing the bleeding was a possibility.

She also had complete previa (I wonder if the two are related now) and had to be on bed rest through most of the second half of her pregnancy. She ended up with an emergency c-section for other complications...she was obese, I don't know if that mattered, but she kept going into preterm labor from about 20 weeks on.

Either way, she was put under, and the only complication she had was that she did bleed a bit, but of course the hospital was ready for that. And she had a little trouble waking up from the anesthesia, but my OB told me that's common (I had trouble after mine, too) and not a big deal. She has a very healthy child, and she has gone on to have two more that were completely non-complicated.

It's better for the docs to know all of this ahead of time. That means they'll be prepared. I know that not seeing your baby born is awful, and I do feel for you. But as far as the rest, you'll be just fine.
