Ok here's a brief history so you can understand my worry here.
I don't really like or trust doctors due to research I've done, experiences related here on bnb and I've never really met one I liked except for my old pediatrician.
My last pregnancy we had state insurance so a homebirth and hospital birth would be about the same cost. I wanted a homebirth anyway especially after I had been lurking here and learned more about it. I did more reaearch and realized that I would probably be safest at home with a low risk pregnancy. So I used two midwives and had a fantastic beautiful magical experience that I wouldn't trade for the world.
Now my husband had good insurance that has zero deductible.
He didnt want to shell out $3500 if he didnt have to which is understandable now that we have a house, two car payments, and a little credit card debt were paying off.
I have some history with a nurse midwife at a gyn practice that saw me for mastitis and the regular gyn stuff. She seems nice.

So....

I go for my first appt today (just medical history n blood panel with nurse)
And I find out .... This midwife doesn't do deliveries!!!!!! (Nurse said its rare and she doesn't do call outs)
This is the only midwife in the practice. So I asked if I see her for prenatal and everything else who delivers? "Oh one of the physicians. "
I have never heard of a midwife who doesn't deliver babies.

I'm also disappointed because this is the only hospital near me (still 45 min) that has a birth center (only one room at that).

Sigh. Thanks for reading if you got this far. You deserve a cookie.

I will see the midwife herself and ask many questions the 22nd. Does anybody have any suggestions? I guess I could benefit from a third party view.

I've never heard of a midwife who doesn't deliver babies- surely that's a pretty big part of the job?! That sucks :(. Could you ask around for recomendations for other midwives? Luckily you have a while to find one you like, if there are any available.

I have no experience with homebirth or midwives, but if there's one thing I learned about my birth experience - I couldn't care less what physician was at my delivery. It's the nursing staff that matters. They will take care of you. They will control whatever physician comes your way. If there are good nurses, you'll be fine.

I actually induced labor with my first because my OB was going on vacation (and I was on my 2nd OB now, since my 1st was on her own maternity leave since I was 35 weeks!), and I didn't want to risk another doctor. I saw him for a grand total of 10 minutes during the whole process.

Best of luck to you momma :)

If you had a home birth with your first, go for it again. I had a home birth with my first and I couldn't imagine having a hospital birth now by choice. It was so wonderful and straightforward and relatively pain-free. And the best way I feel I could have brought my daughter into the world. Even if you have a hospital birth, in the U.S. it's quite easy for charges to creep in. It's rare for an insurance to 100% pay for maternity care, even if you have no deductible. You may have to pay a % or you may have to pay for certain itemized charges that aren't covered by insurance (I'm a health policy researcher and this is one of the things I study - even if your insurance says you're covered, it's easy to end up with a bill for thousands you weren't expecting). If you can find ways to save up the money, I personally would much prefer another natural birth rather than a hospital birth with an OB or a long drive to a midwife in a birth center.
