So, some background on me: I have a 4 year Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology. I have taken courses in Grief and Bereavement, as well as Social work on top of that degree, and my work experience is in an office of a retail chain (answering phones, light accounting duties, etc.). I do not enjoy the office work, and want to make a job change to find a career.
I am currently enrolled to take Social Work courses. I get good grades in these courses, and I do enjoy them however my last course made me doubt myself ever so slightly. It was on interviewing skills, and I was told that when counselling I "talk" too much and ask leading questions. Surely something I can work on, though! If I were to get into Social Work I would probably be interested in working in a school or hospital setting. However, these courses are expensive and I don't want OH and I in any more debt than we already are. Especially with me off work for a year or so after having our first LO. This program will cost me about $10,000 to complete, which is on top of the $20,000 I already spent on my BA. Not to mention I want OH and I to get married, engaged etc soon.
So, the autism program is 1 year, and will cost me less than $5,000 to complete. I am worried in my area there is not enough positions as we don't have much government funding to run more Autism programs around here even though there is a need for it. I love kids, and I have a cousin who has Aspergers and find him a joy to spend time with however I must admit at this point I don't know a whole lot about Autism. I am very patient, and interested in this field just worried I will get myself all educated and then will be in the same situation I am now. Employed in a job unrelated to what I went to school for, that I am underpaid at and dislike.
I don't know what to do! Where I would be most useful, use my skills at, make a decent living and have a career with. Those are my desires, I feel so incredibly stuck. Not to mention my greatest hurdle: finding the money to go to school. OH and I have about 10,000 in debt, about half that saved as an emergency fund for when I am off work and a little one on the way. I can't decide, I just want a happy financial future for my family!
