Hi ladies. im sorry to intrude. just wondering if any of you could give me some help!

i'm a student midwife, studying a neonatal module at the minute. tomorrow i have to do a small presentation re. support available for parents with babies in SCBU.

i have come across the neonatal outreach team and BLISS.

if any of you are able to tell me about the support you recieved from different health proffessionals/groups/organisations i would appreciate it very much (been a bit of a rubbish student leaving my work till the day before :dohh:) - typical lol.

thank you!!!! lots of love to you and your beautiful babies :cloud9: xxxxxxxx

I wish I could help but we've really only had support from Bliss! Our neonatal unit is there for any questions we might have - we can still phone them and we had a visit when we first came home from one of the community nurses.

Our health visitor really doesn't know anything about preemies, without wanting to sound rude! We've had constant arguments about weaning, and she seems to think that the 13 weeks premature bit has been cancelled out and Sophie is a 5 month old full term baby! So not much support from there.

Our GP has been good - he has worked in SCBU in the past and always makes sure he fits Sophie in and spends ages with her - never rushes us out!

We go to a support group which meets once a month, and the mummies from that have been the biggest help to us!

Sorry not to have been more help - hope you manage to get something put together for tomorrow! xxxxx

thanks for the comment :) i will include that in my poster. BLISS look like they do an amazing job. do you go to one of the BLISS support groups or is it a local one?

i am almost finished just waiting for mums to get back to me with their responses. this will teach me not to leave everything until the last minute! thanks again xxxxx

No support at all here. My h.v didnt even know about adjusted age for weight chart!!!! We saw a paed at 8 weeks and just got 'signed off'.

Bliss is probably the main one,Tommys do somework too but i have no experience with them.

Katy above, myself and a few others attend a local bliss group set up by one member on here.

This has answered your question about the group that we attend :)

probably a bit late for you now but we didnt really get much support as Ella's care was split between 2 hospitals due to her surgical problems. There is a prem baby group run by a nurse from local SCBU but we've not been to it yet. I believe there was counselling on offer at the specialist hospital but wasnt offered and apparently there was a social worker there who when we arranged to meet her didnt show up or even contact us to apologise. The main support was from surgical family support sister when Ella got discharged, she comes to see Ella at home as often as we like for as long as we need her to but we've not seen her for coming up to 2 months now.
GP is a waste of space and refers everything back to specialist hospital and wont prescribe more than 2wks of medication at a time. HV is as much use as a chocolate teapot but she's lovely enough, just doesnt know anything about preemies or Ellas condition. Didnt really get given any info about bliss either although i do remember seeing a poster for it in the waiting area. The breastfeeding support nurse was very good, she used to come visit every few days to see how things were getting on and how you were getting on with your expressing, must have worked coz 5months on im still expressing for Ella. Peadiatrician is a waste of time too, more concerned with charts and centiles than actually looking at progress made.

Good luck with your presentation and hope it goes well
