Okay I thought I'd got a grip on things but perhaps not! This maybe long!

At a scan at 11weeks my baby's nuchal measrement was "above 3 mms" no exact measurement was given but from looking at the screen it was about 3.7mm I think. So I was referred to a specialist and at 12 weeks the measurement was 2.8mm Giving me odds of having a baby with down's syndrome at 1:89. However a nasal bone was present which 3 in 4 babies with down's don't have.

So I had the bloods done which gave me a better risk of 1:270.

Then I had a detailed scan at 16 weeks nuchal fold measured 2.2mm so had decreased once again and no abnormality detected. And everything was fine at 20 week scan and all clear at heart scan.

Would you girls still be worried or would you feel pretty good about that?

Sorry for going on just feeling a little hormonal tonight I think

Hi - you responded to one of my threads when I had a wobbly day (my LOs nuchal was 4.4mm and I have been through same process although I had CVS) and reassured me! I would say that you dont have to worry. A lot of babies with downs syndrome have associated heart defects and your baby is fine. There are also a lot of other markers they look for that can tell them about potential abnormalities. Have you had your 20 week scan yet? At mine they said they can rule out any muscular problems just from looking at the hands! I know its hard not to have days when you worry but I am sure your baby is perfect x x

Thank you for replying :hugs:

Yes I had the 20 week scan last weeks and also had a detailed heart scan on the same day. Everything came back clear, they didn't check the nuchal fold again just said it looked fine and normal size.

I did noticed she looked at baby's feet? So not sure what that was for and she did get a good view of his face too, and his hand was up by his face.

I am sure he's fine, and most days I'm fine, just every now and then I feel a bit panicky!! Its nice to know there are false positives tho (even though after my bloods I was classed as screen negative)

Thats great news on the 20 week scan, they rule out so many potential problems then. I'm completely the same as you, I think its only natural after such a scary start. I have a growth scan next Tuesday and despite being fine about things since my 20 week scan I have put my worry hat back on. Sometimes its hard to stay rational  but I am sure my LO is fine too. I know what you mean about false positives, I feel very lucky and its nice to give other people in the same situation hope early on x x x

I don't have a scan now until 28 weeks again a growth scan like yourself, I may sound barmy but I'm actually hoping for a biggish baby(about 7lbs plus) as I know babys with downs are often small, so thinking this may put my mind at rest a bit more!

Worry, worry, worry! Its all we do!!!

I hope your scan goes well :hugs:

Hi

I had a nuchal reading of 2.8mm and with my blood test the odds of having a ds baby were 1:108.

As my odds of mc with amnio were 1:200 I decided to go ahead with the amnio as I didn't want to spend my pregnancy worrying as I thought that wouldn't be good for the baby.

My results all came back ok thankfully.

Your odds are much better than mine were and in my area you are only classed as high risk if your odds are 1:150 or lower. So I wouldn't worry if I were you although I know its hard.

Even if your odds were 1:2 its still means you have a 50% chance the baby is fine.

But yours are ok so enjoy your pregnancy.

Just to add they look at baby head to toe in the scan to check everything is ok.

So I wouldn't worry about her looking at the babys feet.

hey hun, I don't think the nuchal fold measurement is accurate after 14 weeks. they can only do it between 11 and 14 weeks. may be different in different countries though. The rest of what you said sounds pretty good to me though and the nasal bone present is a plus

I pretty sure an abnormailty with the feet - (I think it's club foot?) can in some cases be a sign of Eduards syndrome - another chromosomal ab like Downs. I was 1:150 with my last pregnancy and like you refused amnio, I had a detailed 20 week scan and was told there were no other markers present so I just crossed my fingers that they were right. My lil lad Lockie was born completely normal and will be 3 in June :) I sometimes think to myself how devastating it would have been to have the amnio and lose him unnecessarily. You have to make the decision that sits best with you and look forward to your gorgeous baby whom no matter what you will love more than anything xx

Thank you for your replies ladies :flower:

Its good to know people have gone through the same thing and everythings turned out fine. I'm now gonna try and take the positive outlook as he has a clear nasal bone and no heart problems which are the main signs.

Thank you for making me feel so much better

:hugs:

I had an NT scan and bloodwork done at 12 weeks and even though my NT scan came back normal (2mm and evidence of a nasal bone) with my bloodwork my risk is 1 in 47 chance of having a Downs baby (and 1 in > 10,000 for Trisomy 13 or 18).

So we are opting to have an amnio this friday just to be able to set our minds at ease. We don't want to spend the rest of our pregnancy worrying.

Rachm - what was the procedure like? I have done lots of reading about it but I'd like to know from someone who personally had one. Was it painful?

my last baby was 1 in 230 and this baby was 1 in 290 my dd is perfect and this baby seems fine on the 20 week scan and im 42 so high risk anyway there is always a bit of worry what ever whan you are pregnant but i think like this the odds are really good for us to have a normal baby so i would just enjoy the rest of your pregnancy baby will be fine ours both will pma all the way xxx
