Speech Therapy

Has he been evaluated yet? Or is all that done and his sessions are set to start?

sessions are set to start tomorrow but ive never been to speech therapy before... so think they will evaluate him then?

They'll definitely need to evaluate him first

What sort of issues is he having that's warranting the referral? What they do beyond eval will largely depend on what he's currently dealing with. If it's a delay, they'll investigate why he might be held up (hearing loss, selective mutism, developmental delays, physical form of the mouth, palate, teeth etc)....if it's an annunciation or articulation issue, they'll investigate why he's experiencing it and likely work on strengthening his weaknesses through specific exercises.

Should all be very positive and fun "work" for him, and I'm sure they'll either let you sit in and watch or keep you in the loop about what they're working on so you can continue to do the same things at home

still babbles a lot... and struggles with some words xx but yeah they are letting me sit in with him x

I'm not sure where you're at, but what I've seen in that situation is that typically during evals they'll do a hearing assessment and general health/behavior run down. They'll try to pin point exactly how far he might be behind and why.

From there they'll come up with a plan for him depending on their findings.

If he's generally cooperative and comfortable interacting with them it'll go pretty quick. If not that's ok too, they'll likely just have to go a bit slower so the eval may span a couple of sessions.

I'm hoping all goes well for him, best of luck :)

thank you for your advice.. do they have hearing equipment at speech and language then? xx

It all depends on the facility, but yes, most do everything right there. Should just be a machine hooked up to headphones they'll have him put on (maybe talk about that tonight so he's well prepared?). They'll put tones through at different decibels in each ear and ask him to say, raise his hand when he can hear it.

If they were to find an initial problem with his hearing after that test they may refer you to ENT to do more extensive testing and exams but otherwise they should be able to do most if not everything right there in their office.

We took my son for his first appointment last month, he stutters and weren't sure if it was developmental or a stuttering problem.
They played games with him using toys to assess his speech, they also asked us if we had family history of stuttering. They wanted to know his daily routines and if something happened when he initially started stuttering.

They also do hearing test, DS has a hear tag and they wanted us to go to a specialist, it is ridiculous that they would think the hear tag is related since we have 4 people in the family with hear tags and no issues, where I grew up they are very common. Anyway, hearing test is next week and speech therapy starts in September when he turns four, appointments will be biweekly for a whole year. Good thing is I will be home on mat leave and will be able to take him for all his appointments.

Our speech was mostly in our home, but had some sessions in a facility. Mostly played with toys and it is super fun. It does vary for reason and age, but I think fun is always the main thing to keep it engaging.

I'm a speech therapist. First appointment will be detailed case history and then appropriate assessment of language or speech depending on what the SLT feels is necessary. Might require another appointment after or onward referral to audiology (SLTs don't do hearing tests) or other agencies and treatment plan write up. I'm in wolves so just over the way from you!

ahh cool never been to speech therapy and didn't know they had hearing equipment

Our speech therapist comes to our home and all therapy is play based.
