Squash

Okay I'm not a squash person. I've never had anything other than pumpkin, I'm just not a squash person. So what's the difference between butternut squash and winter squash? I keep seeing that winter squash is ok to give from 4-6 months but I never see anything about butternut. I looked for winter squash (I'm making it myself) but I could only find butternut. Is it still okay to give? That jarred stuff is nasty.
