I'm going to start Caitlin soon - very soon! Just as soon as we're sorted in new house.

My main question is the DON'T give foods & drinks.

I want to vary Caitlin between soft food (jar & homemade - depending) & finger foods - assuming this is ok so I am after some Mum tips of what not to do maybe certain foods not to give or if I do buy a ceratin product/brand, is white bread recommended over brown etc

x

as a rough guide

Is there anything I should avoid?

    • Honey - not before one year
    • Eggs - not before 6 months (from then onwards Eggs should be thoroughly cooked until both white and yolk are solid)
    • Foods containing gluten (including wheat breakfast cereals, bread, rusks) - not before 6 months
    • Nuts and seeds - not before 6 months (no whole nuts under 5 years of age and no peanuts of peanut products until 3 years if baby has close family with allergic conditions such as asthma, hayfeever, eczema)
    • Fish and shellfish - not before 6 months.

in terms of brown bread - bread should be after 6 months, and it is better for babies to have white as too much fibre can cause their digestion problems. Whereas a healthy diet for adults is high fibre low fat, for babies and children under 5 years it is best to have high fat (good fats) and low fibre.

So when I wean her can I give her bottles & start weaning whist giving her somthing to suck/taste on in the day (after 6 months I mean here)? If thats a yes what would/do you give them as snacks/tasters or maybe its not even recommended.

See the whole solid weaning scares me  so Im wanting to do both if you see what I mean.

sorry hun not too sure what you mean.

For snacks I gave Seren rice cakes, chuinks of banana and really ripe pear, steamed carrots, organix carrot stick snacks. After 6 months she would have toast (loved it with peanut butter), breadsticks fruit bread with butter on, stawberries, apple, orange etc etc - can't really remember that much and it was only 2 years ago!!!

It scared me a bit too. Sure you can combine purees and BLW if you would feel more comfy - I just loved the BLW as it meant that I had no worries in giving her lumy foods etc but if you see she is eating lumy snacks then that will give you more confidence. Do what feels right for you.

Dunno if this maybe would help you wobbs?

Thanks Beanie that helps :D

Cheers for link AG - had a quick read and it looks helpful. We read a lil later :D

I read you should not give citrus fruits in the beginning as well, I assume they contain to much acid :hi:

One thing i remember a friend telling me is grape's and never give whole one's always cut them(apparently there the perfect size to block the throat in a baby or young child- i still cut kierans) i now she won't be ready for that sort of stuff yet but its definatly worth knowing. I found the birth to five book really helpful gives guidence on loads of things- ask your HV for one if you haven't already got it. Where i live in wrexham the HV also gave me these weaning flip books that are fridge magnets, they come in stage 123, see if your HV knows anything about them. They've got some really handy recipe's that went down a treat with kieran. I know you wanted 'mum' ideas but hope some of this helps x x
