hi everyone - I haven't decided yet but I am considering buying Ethan a Steiff bear for Christmas. Not so much as a present (as he is really to young to understand about Christmas and he won't get the relevance of it being a Steiff bear over any other kind) but as a kind of heirloom, something he can treasure for ever and maybe pass down to his kids etc.

There are three options: buying the "my first steiff" bear which is £25; or buying the limited edition 2009 bear (year of his birth), which is £150; or not buying one at all.

My hubby doesn't see the point. What do you girls think? Would you buy one? If so which one? I really don't want this to turn into an argument about whether it is right or wrong to spend that much on a teddy, I'd just like to know whether you personally would or if you also think it's a bit pointless.
Thanks!

If I had the money I'd buy the 2009 bear, as it has a special meaning to it. Unfortunately money is a bit tight for us so I can't buy it but I think it's a lovely idea if you can.
On the other side though, you could probably buy him a lot of clothes/toys for the coming year which might be more useful.

i'd personally buy the limited edition one.
i like the idea of that one, where as many people may have the "my first"
just my opinion though :)

I would also love to buy my LO one, and I keep walking past the shop with wistful eyes

My OH also says they are too expensive, but if thats what you want then go for it!! I'd get the limited edition if I had the money :)

When hannah was born last year my inlaws bought her the 2008 one and another one for her to play with but she is not bothered by either but they are still nice to have!

We are buying Olivia the 2009 steiff bear - purely as a keepsake & heirloom. We dont see the point in buy loads of toys etc as she is too young to understand and i know she will get plenty off all our family.

We decided it was going to be either a steiff bear or original piece of art etc obv we'll get her 1 or 2 stocking fillers but i aint going mad!

:)

thanks everyone - oh I am so tempted by the 2009 bear!

My Mum has collected Steif bears for years, i think they're a really good investment to be honest. They will be worth a fair bit more in the future, and once ur child is old enough to understand the relevance of it, its wonderful. I always wanted to play with my mum's collection of bears when I was little, but obviously not allowed, plus I had my own.... but i think I was about 10, we had a day in to ourselves, we went through them all and she told me the stories about why she bought them (they all had really interesting and relevant stories) I have to say its one of my greatest memories, and I get them all when she passes them down cos i'm the eldest. whoop!

We wanted to get Earl the 2009 bear but were told in the shop you can't get it any more, just the 2010 one. We bought the 'My first Steiff' instead and everyone, including Earl, loves it. I think 'Peter' will get more loved as we're not as precious about him as we would have been if he had been the SE model.

My DFS mum collects bears and don't limit yourself to Steiff, they are pretty common now. Find yourself a teddy bear shop and find some real ltd edition bears that are 1 of 10 or even 1 of 1. You can get some beautiful bears with real character :)

thanks everyone
vici - any suggestions of shops you know?

my dd has a steiff bear, she was given it at her christening. it's lovely and something for her to keep forever and pass down to her children / grand children etc.... It costs nearly £200 tho.
But go for it if you want to, i would get the 2009 one!! xxx

Well I just bit the bullet and bought it. Oops!
