still needing bottle after BF

Well since Kyle was very tongue-tied he could not take to the boob so he had a bottle/formula.. Well yesterday he had his tongue-tie snipped he wont lach on properly yet but the BF lady gave me some nipplegards witch means he can feed from me

Only problem is after the 1st time we did this he seemed like he did not want anymore pulled away after a while and then after screamed and took 1oz of formula.. i was eating my dinner.. and the 2nd time with the gards his done it again.

Is this normal because my supply has not grown with him so my boobs are behind his feeding or is he just fussy or am i maybe taking him off to soon even though he seems done? i no its only the first day but would like some advice/reasurance


Oh he would take 2-3oz from a bottle before incase that helps

The only way your boobs will produce enough to fully satisfy him is if the get enough signals from him. So the more you put him to the breast the more they will produce. Unfortunately everytime you the top him up with formula you are telling your boobs that he is full and they are already producing enough!! They cant see you giving him the bottle - they just know he's stopped feeding and so they match the supply accordingly.

Obviously you had to give him formula while he got his tongue tie snipped but now you really need to just keep putting him to your breast.

We fell into the top up trap at your stage and by day 10 we were on a slippery slope. We went cold turkey and just stopped topping up. It was hard. After about 12 hours of constant feeding and her not settling I was shouting to my hubby to 'GET ME A BOTTLE!'...fortunately he had been with me when I saw the BF counsellor who had told me that I just had to keep putting her on. He also knew how much I wanted to exclusively BF. So when I got to breaking point in the middle of the night, he took LO and walked up and down and tried to settle her while I took a time out. She wouldnt really settle but he kept her for an hour and I rested up, drank and ate and then started over.

It wont be easy it times hun but at this early stage it will be much easier than further down the line. We were on day 10 and I'd say we had 3 rough days and then my supply upped and we were back in business. Topping up is totally fine, if you realise that you wint be sending those vital signals to your boobs.

Good luck hun - do you have a supportive OH? Will he take LO and give you a break very so often? when you feel like you have had every drop of moisture sucked from your body and Kyle is getting cross because he's having to work for his food, just give him to OH and take a break. Then when you are ready take him back and just keep putting him on.
